Marriage & Liberty

The Attack on Marriage is an Attack on the Church

Writing to the Ephesians, the Apostle Paul gave instruction regarding the marriage relationship referring to husband and wife (using gender specific pronouns). In this passage, the comparison of marriage to Christ and the Church is made no less than six times. In concluding he says, "...I speak with reference to Christ and the Church." (See Ephesians 5:22-32).

In Christianity, marriage is clearly a holy sacrament intended to demonstrate to the world the relationship between Christ and the church. Marriage is a "God/religious" issue, not a secular one. God established marriage in the beginning. For at least 5000 years, marriage has been defined as the union of a man and a woman and has been the foundational structure of cultures. The breakdown of marriage is a breakdown of culture.

Law and Liberty

Many are using the issue of liberty to support the idea of homosexual marriage. But homosexual marriage does not promote liberty, it undermines it. It seems that some have equated the absence of law with liberty and freedom. However, the absence of law is not freedom, but chaos, and chaos is the breakdown of culture.

The founders understood that good laws must be in place to support liberty and they based the laws of this nation on the Christian scriptures. Below are just two of many quotes that reflect this.

"No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intending to secure the rights and privileges of a free people."

- Noah Webster

"[T]he only foundation for a useful education in a republic is to be laid in religion. Without this there can be no virtue, and without virtue there can be no liberty, and liberty is the object and life of all republican governments."

-Benjamin Rush

We must have laws or culture begins to break down. But the question remains, whose law shall we live under? Shall we live under arbitrary law? Arbitrary law is based on the whims of the people and ultimately leads back to chaos. Shall we live under Islamic law? We have seen the brutal nature of Sharia.

There is one system of law that has proven to produce great freedom and prosperity. That system is the republic established on Christian principles by our founders. Webster said,

Our citizens should early understand that the genuine source of correct republican principles is the Bible, particularly the New Testament, or the Christian religion."

- Noah Webster

Conclusion

Our stand against homosexual marriage is not about hatred or denying rights to homosexuals. It is about an attack on the Christian faith and an attack on the very foundations of our liberty. As the Supreme Court of the United States prepares to hear arguments regarding homosexual marriage, please pray for godly perspectives to prevail and help educate others on this issue.  Feel free to share this mail.
