Notes from the Desk of the President
We are less than a month away from welcoming our first students to Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit. It has been a long year of planning, and I know that I speak for my team when I say we are excited to finally have the students here on campus. Without the efforts of so many, this could not have happened, so please plan to visit soon so you can help us celebrate the grand opening of the 28th Cristo Rey school in the country.
As I have mentioned in numerous homilies, we have invited Pope Francis to come visit as well, and our industrious students have been hard at work making the video below to send to the Pope. Click here and enjoy!
As always, please feel free to forward on this newsletter to anyone you think might be interested in our mission.

Principal's Update
The founding faculty of Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School is in place, and the teachers are very excited to be a part of the school. Ms. Emily Bird will be teaching English. She has taught both middle and high school language arts and is adept at helping students develop their reading and writing skills. Ms. Marcia Pecot was a laboratory biologist before becoming a Biology teacher, so she brings real world knowledge of how science is applied to her teaching. Mr. Carlos Vizcaino is originally from Ecuador and will be our Math teacher. He has taught students from middle school to the college level and has a background in engineering. Mr. Patrick Barry is a recent graduate of Davidson College where he was a Classics major. He will be teaching Latin. Fr. Todd Kenny, SJ, will teach Religious Studies and will also develop our Campus Ministry. Finally, Mrs. Anne Broderick will join the faculty on a part time basis this year and will be assisting Ms. Bird in teaching English. She has taught middle and high school language arts and will transition to a full time teacher as the school grows. We are very excited to have these dedicated professionals as the original faculty of Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit.

Back Row L-R: Patrick Medley (Dean of Students), Fr. Jim Van Dyke, SJ (Principal)
Front Row L-R: Emily Bird (English); Carlos Vizcanio (Math); Patrick Barry (Latin); Diane Bush (Assistant Principal); Marcia Pecot (Science); Fr. Toddy Kenny, SJ (Religious Studies)

Jesuit Fun Fact
One distinctive aspect of Jesuit education is the emphasis on teaching "the whole person" - mind, body, and spirit.
Schools foster not only intellectual development, but also moral and spiritual growth. Jesuit high schools aim is to produce students who are "open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice," by the time they leave. Those are five characteristics pinpointed by the periodically updated Profile of the Graduate of a Jesuit High School at Graduation, better known as the "Grad at Grad" report. |

Admissions Update
To date, 127 students have either registered or committed to attend Cristo Rey for the upcoming academic year. On June 11, 27 additional acceptances were mailed, increasing our total number of accepted students to 159. It certainly appears that the inaugural class of Cristo Rey will exceed our goal of 125 students! Interested students are still encouraged to apply, but should complete their paperwork as soon as possible as we are drawing close to our deadline.
Admissions questions can be forwarded to Lina Monsalve-Bonilla, Director of Admissions.

Volunteer Work Day, this Saturday, June 21... we still need help! Many thanks to the wonderful volunteers who have moved furniture, cleaned up and generally helped make the building look and feel like a school. But we still have a few more things to do and another Work Day is scheduled for THIS Saturday. One again, the All Saints Knights of Columbus will be hand to grill up a fabulous lunch for the volunteers.

Work Study Program Update
Having found jobs for all our students, we now need to assure their skills match well with the needs of our sponsors. With that in mind, we are creating the curriculum for the Business Training Institute (BTI) which will include subjects such as Microsoft Office Products, first impressions, hygiene, office machinery, etiquette, workplace safety, and business dress. At the completion of the BTI, the school and work year will officially begin.
The BTI will run from August 4-15, and is a huge undertaking. We are blessed that our faculty will teach most of the courses, but please watch for requests for volunteers which will be forthcoming. Immediately following the BTI, all the student teams will go to work together for the first time on the 18th. We will need appropriately skilled adults to accompany the teams to the job sites for a few hours that afternoon. Again, watch for a request for volunteers.

Development Update
With our first fiscal year coming to a close on June 30, the Development Office has wonderful news to report. The Atlanta community has been overwhelmingly generous, as have local and national foundations, the Society of Jesus and the Archdiocese of Atlanta. In total, we have received just over $3.5M in gifts this year, with another $3M in pledges to be paid over the next few years. This generosity has allowed us to prepare the school for our wonderful students.
One area where we still need help is with Student Scholarships. The cost to educate is covered through the student's CWS fee, the Georgia Private School Tax Credit (Grace Scholars) and philanthropy. The later covers an approximately gap of $5,000. We are looking for donors who would like to commit to covering that $5,000 gap throughout a student's four years at the school. If you are interested in doing so, please contact Camille Naughton, Director of Development.
As always, gifts of any size are needed and appreciated and can be made online.

More Mentors are Needed
Most of us have had someone in our lives who helped make us who we are today, perhaps it was a parent or family member or a teacher or neighbor or early employer. These early influencers provided council and were people we could ask questions of and seek guidance. Our students will greatly benefit from this type of support.

Community Supporter of the Month
Under the amazing leadership of Amy & Dave O'Brien, 60 or so Deloitte volunteers converged on Cristo Rey Atlanta on June 6. The group worked tirelessly alongside Cristo Rey faculty and staff to ready the school for the start of the academic year. Great job Deloitte!
