Cristo Rey In the News
Notes from the Desk of the President

We are less than two months away from watching the first Cristo Rey Atlanta students walk through our doors.  Our staff continues to work hard to finalize enrollment and ready the physical campus for their arrival.  In addition, Father Van Dyke has been working diligently to assemble an exceptional group of faculty members.

As opening day quickly approaches, we reflect back on the countless people who have helped get us to where we are today - from the members of the Feasibility Study, our Board of Trustees, donors, volunteers etc.  It has been an incredible community effort to launch Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit, and all who have had a part should be proud of their efforts.

If you know of anyone who might like to read about our progress, please feel free to forward on this newsletter.

President

Update from Principal Father Jim Van Dyke, SJ

Mrs. Diane K. Bush joins the founding faculty as Assistant Principal.  Diane brings a wealth of experience to our academic team with multiple masters degrees and a doctorate in progress.  She enjoys working with older children and young adults, and comes to us most recently from Our Lady of the Assumption School, where she has been teaching science and English/Language Arts.  Diane and her husband reside in metro Atlanta where they raised their two children.  Mr. Patrick D. Medley, Sr., has been named our founding Dean of Students.  In addition to degrees in Human Relations and Gerontology, Patrick has worked extensively in the Boys and Girls Cubs and PATH Academy Charter School.  His is a familiar face at Cristo Rey; Patrick has served as our Admissions Coordinator since October.  He and his wife live here in the metro Atlanta area with their sons, Patrick, Jr., and Hunter.

Jesuit Fun Fact

The students of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School will never have to serve detention!  No such thing exists in Jesuit schools.  Instead, they will serve JUG, a word either derived from the Latin jugum (yoke) or the acronym Justice Under God; either way, it is the Jesuit term for-you guessed it!-detention.

Admissions Update

115 students are now pre-registered and committed to forming our inaugural class! Momentum and anticipation for the first Cristo Rey Atlanta school year is getting stronger as the Admissions Department continues to receive inquiries from students across metro Atlanta, and even from outside the state of Georgia.

Accepted students and candidates in the Admissions process are encouraged to finish the 2013-2014 school year in great fashion.  The Admissions Department continues to work hard to reach our goal of over 125 accepted students.  Interested students are still encouraged to apply, but they should complete their paperwork as soon as possible as we are drawing close to our deadline.

Admissions questions can be forwarded to Lina Monsalve-Bonilla, Director of Admissions.

Work Study Program Update

As the school year quickly approaches, the Corporate Work Study Program moves into the next phase.  Newly hired and enormously talented Lymicca Pierre, our Corporate Work Study Coordinator, will begin to visit our sponsors to determine the skills needed by their respective teams.  During the upcoming Business Training Institute, attended by all students, an assessment of their individual talents will be made to aid in matching students to sponsors.  This work starts with the first of two Sponsor Orientations to be hosted this week at school.

Our list of sponsors continues to grow with the addition of SunTrust Bank.  Several other large companies are still in the discernment process and some noteworthy additional announcements are forthcoming.  Click here for a full list of our committed sponsors to date.

Development Update

Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit has once again been fortunate to receive the generous support of local foundations. In May, the following two grant were awarded:

Vasser Woolley Foundation - $50,000
Sara Giles Moore Foundation - $25,000

With these two gifts, the total in grant designations to the school since July have now exceeded $1 million.  Click here to see a full list of foundation gifts made this fiscal year.

Personal donations still make up the majority of gifts to the school.  We welcome any financial assistance you can give, and can assure you that your generosity will be used to provide a student with skills to lift themselves, and often times their families, out of poverty.  If you would like to support the school, we would greatly appreciate your online donation.  If you would to discuss supporting the school with the Development Director, please contact Camille Naughton.
Georgetown Alumni Gather at Cristo Rey

On May 15, Hoya alums met at Cristo Rey to show their support for the newest Jesuit school in the country.  Alumni heard from Cristo Rey Principal Jim Van Dyke, SJ, and Cristo Rey Development Chair Bruce Simmons, Georgetown '69.

Members of the Georgetown Alumni Club are eager to get involved at Cristo Rey and will be volunteering as mentors, student interviewers, donors and more.
Community Supporter of the Month

From the very beginning, Woodward
Academy has been enormously
supportive of the idea of bringing a
Cristo Rey school to Atlanta.  That
was never more visible than on May
14, when Woodward employees drove four school buses - (2) 56-passenger and (2) 14-passenger, into the Cristo Rey parking lot, thus personally delivering a gift valued in excess of $100,000 to Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit.
