Record Breaking November
Culver-Stockton College
|
With the spirit of giving in full swing following national "Giving Tuesday," we wanted to share the enthusiasm surrounding year-end giving, resulting in a record-breaking November.
Gifts received for the month totaled $371,000, which is $44,000 more than any other November on record. The majority of donations went to support the Mabee Challenge for our future Recreation and Wellness Center, the Annual Fund for Student Scholarships, and our endowment- each major areas of focus in our campaign. A total of 581 donors made gifts during the month. Let's finish 2013 strong by supporting our students and their experience on campus.

C-SC 'Advantage': CUBA
Did you see the travel blog, photos & video clips?
|
By now you have heard about the amazing Travel Opportunities that C-SC students get to experience as part of the 12/3 semester. Students recently had the rare opportunity to complete a Travel Study course in Cuba. While there, they took a walking tour of Old Havana, enjoyed dance performances by Regala Folkloric group, went to Ernest Hemingway's home, visited the studios of famous Cuban artists, enjoyed music at Club La Zorra, visited local schools and more! This was a Travel Study like never before! The Quincy Herald-Whig hosted a travel blog of the students' time in Cuba, written by C-SC staffer Jen Roberts. She accompanied the students to Cuba and documented their experiences by taking photos, writing blog posts and capturing video clips. Check the blog out at www.whig.com/cuba.
Want to go on your own C-SC Travel Study? Alumni and friends are invited to join the Germany/Austria Travel Study in May. If you would like to receive more details, please contact Patrick Hotle at photle@culver.edu

Kenton Bowles '95 Speaks to Students
|
 | Kenton Bowles '95 |
Kenton Bowles shared some of his real world experience when he spoke to an auditing class, Nov. 11.
Kenton graduated from C-SC with a Bachelor of Science in accountancy and business administration. He is currently the owner of Blue Horizon Tax Consulting, which provides state and local tax services and solutions to accountants, attorneys, private and public companies and non-profit organizations.
Kenton shared the benefits of starting an accounting career in the auditing field. He explained the importance of learning various aspects of the accounting field in order to broaden students' career opportunities.
"If students start their career in the auditing field, they will learn about all of the functions of an organization and get the opportunity to meet a lot of CFOs and controllers of various organizations," said Kenton.
He also provided his advice on how to best transition from college life to a career.

Teach a Class to Fellow Alumni
|
The Summer Alumni Weekend is planned for June 20-22, 2014, and you are invited to teach a special class based on your interests. Do you make jewelry, know C-SC history, make your own wine or cook with an international flare? We are looking for alumni with talents, professions, or hobbies that would like to teach their fellow alumni how to make, mold, cook, or sculpt. Everyone is invited to share their talents.
We are limited to 12 class options, with each class lasting one hour and fifteen minutes. If you are interested in sharing your talents, please e-mail Jennifer Sousa at jsousa@culver.edu with your name and talent.
More details on the weekend to come, so save the date!

Planned Giving Initiative Announced Meet Steve Miller
|
The Office of Advancement is pleased to welcome Steve Miller as the director of Advancement and Planned Giving. Steve comes to the College from Hannibal-LaGrange University, where he served as vice president of Institutional Advancement. Steve has also worked for Culver-Stockton College as a development officer.
"A planned gift requires much more thought on the part of the donor. Many people are reluctant to create a simple will. In the United States, 55 percent of adults pass away without a will. I hope through my efforts, I can help inform and educate the Culver-Stockton community about the planning process and demonstrate how a planned gift can benefit both family members and charities like Culver-Stockton College," said Steve Miller.
