Jewish Response
To The Murder Of
Mohammed Abu Khdeir

by Radio Chavura Staff

Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar, and Naftali Frankel had not been in the ground yet a day when Palestinian teenager Mohammed Abu Khdeir was kidnapped outside of his home and brutally murdered in a forest outside of Jerusalem.

Now we learn that six Jewish extremists have been arrested in connection with the murder of this 16-year-old innocent Arab child.

Meanwhile, Mohammed's younger cousin, American Tariq Khdeir, made worldwide headlines after a video surfaced that appears to show him being beaten by Israeli police.

So how do mainstream Jewish leaders and members of the community respond to these disturbing developments? And how do our responses compare to those of Arab leaders and community members to the murders of Eyal, Gilad and Naftali?

1. Our leadership quickly condemns the crime.

This week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted:

"We do not distinguish between acts of terrorism, and we will react harshly against both. We do not distinguish between forms of incitement... As I condemn the calls of death to Arabs, I condemn calls of death to Jews... Such murderers have no place in Israeli society."

Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon said:

"The lowly murderers do not represent the Jewish people and its values, and we should relate to them in the way we relate to terrorists," he said. "We shall not allow Jewish terrorists among us to disrupt the fabric of life between different groups in the State of Israel and to hurt the innocent only because they are Arabs. Such acts and those similar to them do damage to the State of Israel and give it an ugly face, and we must fight their perpetrators with an iron fist."

Former Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar added:

"We can't lose our heads [in actions of vengeance]. There are soldiers, and policemen, and security forces, praise God [to carry out true justice]. And we can rest assured that by the grace of God, they will take the correct and necessary steps."

The Jewish Federations of North America and JewishColorado:

"We echo the strong words of Rachel Frankel, mother of murdered Israeli teen, Naftali, who said: 'If a young Arab really was murdered for nationalist reasons, this is a horrifying and shocking act. There is no difference between blood and blood. Murder is murder. There is no justification, no pardon and no atonement for murder.'"

2. We hunt the murderers down.

Although the Palestinians who murdered Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar, and Naftali Frankel have yet to be apprehended, the six accused killers of Mohammed Abu Khudair are in Israeli custody. We move quickly to find criminals and members of lynch mobs, because we believe in justice and are Divinely mandated to pursue it:

"Justice, justice shall you pursue, that you may live and possess the land the Lord, your God, is giving you." - Deuteronomy 16:20

3. We all express our horror.

Rabbi Bernard Gerson of Congregation Rodef Shalom concluded Saturday morning services this week with a prayer for Eyal, Gilad, Naftali, and Mohammed. The entire assembly of worshipers stood, bowed their heads, and recited the Mourners Kaddish for those four souls. We do not distinguish between innocent Jewish victims and innocent Palestinian victims.

We are taught:
"When your enemy falls, do not rejoice; and when he stumbles, let your heart not exult [Proverbs 24:17]."

And finally: "I am the Lord; I called you with righteousness and I will strengthen your hand; and I formed you, and I made you for a people's covenant, for a light to nations... to open blind eyes, to bring prisoners out of a dungeon, those who sit in darkness out of a prison [Isaiah 42:6-7]."

Rabbi Bruce Dollin of the Hebrew Educational Alliance sent an email to all HEA members.  It read, in part:

"With deep sadness we mourn the senseless murder of Palestinian teenager, Muhamed Abu Khdeir...No one is cheering.  Blind hatred harms all of us.  Let us work for tolerance and peace. We pray for peace in Israel."

What has Israelis so shaken is the simple fact that the three boys were hunted, kidnapped and murdered simply because they were Jews. They were not soldiers. They had not strayed into Arab villages. They were but the latest victims in a long, painful history of millions who preceded them - killed because they were Jews.

Had they been Druze Israelis, they would not have been touched. Had they been Muslim Israelis, they would not have been kidnapped. Had they been Christian Israelis, they would not have been shot. A millennium after the Crusades, and almost three quarters of a century after the Holocaust, Jews are still dying simply because they are Jews. The quiet, dignified weeping throughout Israel is a response to our renewed awareness that this horror is simply never going to end.

25 Hot Israeli Tech Startups

by Ilya Pozin (June 29, 2014)

Israel's dynamic tech startup scene is no secret. The country has been called the "start-up nation" for years and, today, only the U.S. and China have more companies listed on the NASDAQ than Israel's 90 - worth a total of $40 billion. Innovation continues and a new crop of Israeli tech startups are on their way up, transforming healthcare, entertainment, finance, media and a myriad of other industries. The hot startups below have secured funding from investors, and are perhaps, on their way to successful exits or IPOs. Here are 25 Israeli tech startups to watch this year... WeeklyPhoto

WHERE ARE COLORADO'S JEWS HIDING?
A New Way to Connect with Colorado's Growing Jewish Community

We know they're out there.

Population studies confirm that Colorado is home to more than 90,000 Jewish residents - a number that almost certainly continues to swell with the influx of newcomers to our Centennial State.

But where are these modern-day descendants of Abraham and Sarah?  How can we connect with them and encourage them to be in contact with us: the Jewish organizations, congregations, businesses, medical facilities and community resources that are anxious to welcome and serve them?

Since our launch on July 1, 2012, Radio Chavura has used the broadcast airwaves, e-newsletters, social networking sites, photography and videos to connect with both the established Colorado Jewish community and the many so-called "Hidden Yeedin," who identify as Jews, but don't readily affiliate with organized Jewish groups and institutions.

Now, as we celebrate our third year of operations, Radio Chavura is pleased to announce plans to publish a free, four-color magazine that will reach Colorado Jews where they shop, eat, learn, live, play, pray and care for themselves.

The inaugural edition of The Radio Chavura Magazine, scheduled to arrive in late August - one month ahead of this year's High Holidays - will be distributed for free to 15,000+ Jewish readers in Metro Denver, Boulder, Northern Colorado, Colorado Springs, Vail and Aspen.

The magazine will be edited by Maxwell and Dean Rotbart, who produce and co-host the weekly Radio Chavura audio programs.  Photography will be provided by Avital Rotbart, who regularly captures local Jewish events and celebrations.

Read more about it and learn how your business or organization can get involved here.
