Jewish Time Travel:
In the Year 1993...
Radio Chavura - The Chavura Times
Every Sunday @ 6:30 p.m. on 990 KRKS AM in Denver
Available 24/7 on www.Chavura.com

Travel back in time with Radio Chavura to July 1993 and hear the anticipation of opening a new Jewish day school, the Denver Academy of Torah. Bill Clinton was our President and the Colorado Rockies were in their very first season of baseball.

Jan Lightstone, one of the school's founding parents, helps set the scene and share the atmosphere that surrounded DAT's humble beginnings. The founding families dreamed that one day DAT would grow to become a successful K-12 school with a nationwide reputation for quality education - both secular and religious.

With the help of Rabbi Daniel Alter, we then leap forward to the current day as DAT fulfills its original promise and prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Joining us in the studio are dinner honorees Cantor Zachary and Trude Kutner, and Jeff Wilson.

Denver Academy of Torah, as co-hosts Dean and Maxwell Rotbart point out, contributes to and draws from Colorado's vibrant Jewish community. DAT graduates embody integrity, honesty and kindness, along with respect and tolerance for all.  Moreover, they aspire to be Torah observant Jews; identify with the people and land of Israel; and feel a responsibility for all Jews worldwide.

"Members of the Colorado Jewish community - especially those without children currently attending DAT - who have the foresight to help support the school in 2013, will see DAT's graduates repaying our investment in them many times over in the years and decades to come," observes Maxwell Rotbart, who, himself, is a DAT graduate.

"Today's DAT students," says Dean Rotbart, "are tomorrow's synagogue presidents, Federation leaders, philanthropists, and - most importantly - model Jewish moms and dads."

The 20th Annual Dinner, which also honors Dr. Peggy Kasloff, the beloved and respected K-8 Principal, will be held on Sunday, March 3rd.  To attend or make a contribution, visit the dinner website.

True to her dedication to the school, Dr. Kasloff was not able to break away to participate in the Radio Chavura taping.  But her contributions to the school and to the community at large were noted by each of the guests and hosts.

Last week on the broadcast edition of Radio Chavura, we spoke with Dr. Herzl Melmed, one of Denver's premier Zionist leaders and Chairman of ActionIsrael, a grassroots organization dedicated to actively supporting Israel.  Dr. Melmed is also co-founder of the highly regarded Middle East Study Group, which meets monthly.

We then spoke with Lt. Col. Dr. Mordechai Kedar, a professor of Arab Studies at Bar-Ilan University. Dr. Kedar was in Denver last week speaking at multiple events, courtesy of ActionIsrael.  He is an expert on Islam, Islamic Movements, gender issues in Islam, Arabic mass media, popular culture in the Arab world, state and society in the Arab world.  His topic: "Can the Arab World Accept Israel as a Jewish State?"

It's Time to Address Jewish Day School Tuition

Denver has five top-tier Jewish schools - Beth JacobDenver Academy of TorahDenver Jewish Day SchoolHillel Academy, and Yeshiva Toras Chaim
We Support Jewish Day SchoolsSadly, these schools are often under-funded, and parents increasingly must struggle to afford Jewish day school tuition.

As 2012 drew to a close, hosts Maxwell and Dean Rotbart shared two of their ideas for solving the day school tuition crisis without raising rates, refusing students, or turning to government funding. How is this possible?
