Adam R. Flores!
What is your name and what is your classification?
My name is Adam R. Flores and I am a sophomore here at Palo Alto College. I am currently enrolled in 12.00 credit hours. I have registered for what may be my final semester here at Palo Alto College for the Spring. I will be taking 13.00 credit hours in order to receive an Associates of Arts Liberal Arts Degree and an Associates of Science Pre-Nursing Degree upon completion and graduation.
Tell us what STEM field you are Interested in pursuing?
I am interested in pursuing either an Associates RN degree at SAC or a Bachelors RN degree from UTHSC. I am planning on trying to apply for both schools and after the whole process I will find out if I'm accepted at one of the two or both. I plan on continuing my education even after I am done with Nursing School. I have aspirations of either getting a Doctorates of Nursing or maybe becoming a Nurse Practitioner.
What event motivated/inspired you to study in the Nursing field?
I was motivated and inspired to study in the nursing field after taking a test to see what jobs I would best be suited for; Nursing was at the top of my list. I like to help people, I am a people person, and I love both science and math. When I saw it at the top of my list I thought it was the perfect fit for me.
With the program you are pursuing, what are your future employment/educational goals?
I plan to finish Nursing School and then get into the field of nursing first. After I get my foot in the door I plan on continuing with my education and attending school part time while working as a full-time Nurse. After I am able to attain a Master's Degree I plan on using that to move up the ladder. While still attending school I ultimately would like to either get a Doctorates of Nursing or become a Nurse Practitioner. I'm not sure as of now which I am going to do yet, so I will cross that bridge when I get there. In working as a Nurse I plan to become a Head Nurse or Manager of Nurses before completing my final goals of my education.
What would you like to tell a student who is just starting classes at PAC?
I would tell a student that is just starting out at PAC to show up for classes and do your homework. The number one rule to try and live by is DON'T PROCRASTINATE. School isn't hard if you study, take notes, and turn all your assignments in on time. If you have a big test don't go out the night before, get some sleep and study enough to do as well as you can because TEST tend to bear a lot more weight on your grade than a homework assignment. That is the formula for getting good grades in College, study hard, sleep well, show up, do your work in a timely manner, and don't procrastinate. Just do your best and everything else should fall into place. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for help from your professor, if you don't understand something a few questions and answers should help clarify it for you. A final note would be to use your resources such as: the math lab, science lab, writing lab, library, advising center and the welcome center.
Has being a STEM student opened up any opportunities for you while here at PAC?
At the moment, I can't say it has yet but, I had more money for books, school supplies, and other miscellaneous things I needed for school due to the scholarships that I received. It also doesn't hurt that being awarded scholarships can be listed as an accomplishment on an application. I work hard and it is good to occasionally be rewarded for your hard work.

Dr. Glen S. Tanck, Assistant Professor of Geology and Physics
What is your educational Background?
I have Bachelors and Masters Degrees in geology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have a PhD. in geology from the University of Arizona.
How long have you been teaching at PAC?
I am currently in my thirteenth year at PAC.
What motivated/inspired you to enter into Geology field?
I had always liked to learn about the earth and space. I grew up on a farm where there were interesting rocks and fossils to be found. When I went off to the university and took my first geology course, I decided to make it my major. I liked the professor's use of lots of pictures of the geology in places that he had traveled. Then my best friend and I took a 10 week long trip out west to see national parks and monuments where so much spectacular geology is on display. I decided then that geology would be my major.
Can you provide an example on how STEM fields are valuable to society and the world?
It's hard to pick a single example, but I will use one from my own field. Geologists play the major role in finding the energy and mineral resources that supply our modern world with the fuels, metals, etc. that our increasing technological society requires.
In what STEM fields do you predict the greatest impact and job growth?
I would expect the greatest numerical growth to be in biology because of its role in health care, but also in engineering where there is a shortage of U.S. born engineers. Although, the number of professional geologists is comparatively small, job growth in the field is currently very strong and it's expected to remain that way for many years to come.
What are some pointers that you would like to give students as they continue their academic career?
Do not shy away from taking science and math courses. You might decide that pursuing a well-paying career in one of the STEM fields is worth the extra effort.
