Guidance Counselor Corner
High School News

Many exciting things have been taking place in the Guidance Counseling Department this year. Rising Star Academy's first graduating class has been busy applying to many Colleges and writing their college essays. The universities include: Seton Hall, Rutgers University, Montclair State University, Drew University, City University of New York, Kean University and New York University. Insha'Allah, the seniors are off to a great start with their academic endeavors, and we make Dua that Allah guides them to the best of these options.

The LEAP program with Hudson County Community College has proven to be a huge success. Numerous representatives from universities and colleges from Rising Star Academy's College Fair all stated that they do in fact accept general education courses from HCCC if the student successfully completes the course. This opportunity not only allows the student to earn college credits while still in high school, but also familiarizes the student with the actual college environment. Our high school students just concluded their Introduction to Computer Science course for the fall semester. RSA Seniors and Juniors will be taking an Introduction to Psychology course in the spring while the freshman and sophomore students will take a public speaking course.

Students who participated in the PSAT exam now have their official scores. The students were able to discuss their scores one on one with the guidance counselor. Many of the junior students are now ready to register for the real SAT exam. This exam was a practice for the freshman and sophomore students who are now better aware of their strengths and weaknesses and have ample of time to study and prepare for their future SAT exams.

Career Day, What a Success!
Jazakum Allah Khair to the professionals in the Muslim community who gave their time to talk to our students.

The purpose of this event was to give our students insight into these professional fields, answer their questions, and to motivate them to think about their future academic plans.

Nelson Mandela Awareness

Monday December 16, 2013 marked the launch of our campaign at RSA to bring student awareness on the life of Nelson Mandela.  The History department presented a brief introduction on Mandela's life, which explained European Colonization of Africa.  This begins a school-wide research project, a joint project between the English and History departments.  Each grade will now be responsible for a writing product on one aspect of this leader's accomplishments.
