Classic Yacht of the Month

M/V  Elixir
Elixir Charters
St. Thomas, USVI

M/V  Elixir

This month's classic yacht is M/V "Elixir". This 1982 Hatteras 520 is owned and operated by David & Janet MacNeil.  Elixir operates as a day charter yacht under Elixir Charters out of St. Thomas, USVI.

Elixir's Salon

The 56' Hatteras was one of the first of the wide body Hatteras models which changed the beam from 15'10" to 18' 3" and 56' length as opposed to 53', giving tons more room. Both the 53' motoryacht and 56' motoryacht are two of the most popular model Hatteras' ever built due to the great three stateroom/ three head layout, split walk in engine rooms, great hull, great electrical system, impeccable wiring and lavish use of the still available non laminate teak.

Captains David & Janet MacNeil

David is originally from St. Louis, but has lived in Chicago and NYC. He holds a 100 ton US Coast Guard Masters License and is also a certified rescue scuba diver.  Prior to getting into the charter business, David was a jet fighter pilot in the Navy and then went on to a 30 year career as an international airline captain, during which he logged over 20,000 hours of flying time.

Janet is originally from San Diego and like David she also has a 100 ton US Coast Guard License.  She holds an advanced open-water diver certification and has done several hundred dives.

                                                                     Spirit  Salon

Spirit is an immaculate kept 45' Hunter owned and operated by Captains Tim and Angela Cordts.  Tim is from San Antonio, TX and started sailing when he was 16 years old.  Motor or sail, mono hull or catamaran, if it floats, chances are Tim's been at the helm.   As a result of a great career in the United States Air Force, Tim saw much of the world including Turkey, Greece and Sicily.   While stationed in Greece in 1982 he met the true spirit of his life, Angela.  They were married in Great Falls, Montana in 1983.

Angela was born in Cornwall England.  She spent several years working in the hotel business and then worked as a stewardess on mega yachts in the Mediterranean in the 80's.

Spirit Forward Guest Cabin

The Captains of this winning team take safety very seriously. Rule number one is: Don't break the boat. If you sail so as not to break the boat there is less chance of anyone being hurt. As professional owner/operators, they recognize that people who cannot sail place their trust in them to safely show them this beautiful environment.

Tim made an interesting statement when he said  "We recognize there are always a number of other people (other than the crew and guests) aboard the yacht when sailing. You cannot see them, but they are there. The principle ones are the designer/engineer, the builder and the insurance underwriter and many others who work or have supplied products that have brought into our lives a yacht such as our Hunter 460, Spirit.

                            Captains Tim & Angela Cordts

Through owning a charter yacht business Tim and Angela have been able to meet people from all around the world. They have enjoyed and benefited

learning about  different cultures which has been a real pleasure and a truly unique experience.

Several suppliers will open operations near new Bertram Yacht plant

Need a job? Bertram Yacht plant is hiring: Bertram plant relocates to Merritt Island from Miami. The combined headquarters and production plant will ramp up to employ 221 people within two years

Bertram Yacht's decision to move its manufacturing operations from Miami to Merritt Island already has started a stream of other boating-related companies that plan to open new operations or expand existing ones along the Space Coast.

Bertram executives on Wednesday made their long-anticipated decision official, announcing that they will move their headquarters and manufacturing to a former SeaRay Boats facility on a 37-acre site on Merritt Island. The combined headquarters and production plant will ramp up to employ 221 people within two years, up from the 125 people Bertram employs in Miami.

Company President Alton Herndon said several of his Miami suppliers already are making plans open facilities in or near Merritt Island so they can retain their contracts with Bertram.

In addition, Bertram Vice President of Manufacturing Ken Beauregard expects local suppliers of boating equipment and services to expand because of new business from the Bertram plant.

 Marilyn Eckel

Marilyn Eckel was born on a small island in the mouth of the famous River Thames in England, so her passion for the sea was formed at an early age. By her teenage years she was racing dinghies at weekend, and by the age of 23 she bought a 27 foot yacht so she could indulge in weekend sailing along the Kent coastline. Her role model was Clare Francis who sailed single handed around the world in the 1970's, and after reading her autobiography, Marilyn set herself a goal to do some serious sailing at some time in her life. Every vacation was a sailing vacation and was either bareboat sailing or flotilla sailing in France, Greece or other Mediterranean locations.

                                 Mega Yacht Essence

Ann E & Marilyn attend all major yacht shows around the world on a regular basis to keep in touch with what changes are going on in the industry.  They both have traveled and cruised all the most popular areas so they know what their clients expect and what areas they can recommend.  They provide their known support facilities to owners and crews. Hackshaw's Boat Charters

St. Lucia

The Hackshaw family introduced charter boating to the island of St. Lucia.  It all started over 60 years ago when "Big Bill" Hackshaw started the first charter boat operation in St. Lucia.

His magnetic personality and unique knowledge of the sea has been passed on through the years to his sons David and Paul and his grandchildren Chris, Nicholas, Anthony, Jacqui and Caroline who now own and run Hackshaw's Boat Charters.

                                                      M/V "Party Hack"

Despite the growing number of boats they operate, Hackshaw's has remained a small family business.  As a result, they have kept that personal service their customers have come to expect.

They currently operate four boats.  Three of them are used mainly for sportfishing and their brand new custom boat "Lady Hack" was designed to be a Whale Watching Boat and is also versatile enough for a wide variety of tours including private charters.

All their captains are "hooked" on fishing- just try to drag'em home without a catch!! After all, they had the grandfather of all fishermen "Big Bill" as their mentor!  St. Lucia's waters are abundant with a variety of Big Game Fish, such as Blue Marlin, Sail Fish, Yellow Fin Tuna, Wahoo and Dorado, to name but a few.  Hackshaws strongly believes in conservation and therefore they practice the tag and release of all Bill Fish; that is why you will not see any dead Bill Fish hanging anywhere in their advertisements!!!!

Regardless whether you are a pro or novice in this sport, everyone is always very welcome aboard. All  boats are diesel powered, tournament rigged with the very best in fishing equipment, yearly inspected and licensed by The St. Lucia Port Authority, St. Lucia Coast Guard.

So when you are on St Lucia and wanting to do some sportfishing, whale watching or just  take in the sights of the beautiful island, why not go with the family that started it all?

Knowing your Islands

St. Lucia

The island of St Lucia also called island in the sun , is a small, simply beautiful country with picturesque visions of pure tranquility located towards the center of the Caribbean chain. It is 238 sq. miles, 27 miles long and 14 miles wide.

The Island is of volcanic origin which has its benefits. One of those benefit is the St Lucia Pitons.

The Pitons are majestic twin peaks called Gros Piton (797m) and Petit Piton (750m) which soars from the sea. These twin peaks are the only two of its kind in the world and have recently attained world heritage site status.

St Lucia also provides visitors with an opportunity to visit the only drive-in-volcano in the world and bathe in the therapeutic sulphur springs, mineral baths, our beautiful cascading waterfalls and our one of a kind unspoiled beaches located all over the island.

We are also known for our botanical flower gardens depicting all the tropical flowers and lush vegetation you can think of. A day at anyone of these will have you coming back to the island of St Lucia year after year; or even sooner.

Hope for the Warriors

The Pegasus Group was recently approached by Ken Huff who is the spokesman for the Hope For The Warriors organization. Ken played in the NFL for 11 seasons and won a Super Bowl ring with the Washington Redskins in 1983.  Hope For The Warriors is an organization that gives back to veterans and their families.  The organization is going on 4 years old.  95% of the money raised goes to the veterans families and their needs.

Hope for the Warriors are looking for any yacht owners in the Caribbean that would be willing to take veterans out for either a day or longer (2 to 7 days) as a way of giving back to them for their sacrifice and putting their lives on the line.  The organization would pay the expenses of the food and fees associated with the time you would be willing to give.

Our country recently celebrated memorial day weekend to honor our veterans.  We do not have to wait another 12 months to honor them once again,  we can continue to honor them year around and we our hoping some yacht owners will step forward and be gracious enough to offer them some time on a yacht.

Anyone doing so will receive a tax credit equal to the Dollar amount you would normally charge for the time you would be willing to give.

If your willing to help you can contact Ken Huff at 919-422-8173.  You can visit the Hope For The Warriors web site at www.hopeforthewarriors.org

They were willing to step up will you?

If you thought planking was a fad to be reckoned with, take a look at this new photographic trend popular amongst Russian teens. It's called skywalking, and it's when a photographer climbs his or her way up to nausea-inducing heights atop a series of structures, stands on its very edge, and snaps a photo of the view down. Skyscrapers, electrical towers, monuments -- if it's tall and dangerous looking, teens in Russia are climbing it to capture some breathtaking shots. To top it off, the thrill-seeking photographers seem to be working without any safety equipment whatsoever. But they must be enjoying it, because tons of these photos have been hitting the internet in the past few days

Luxury Sports Car Pileup Reconstructed by Police

  • The aftermath of one of the world's most expensive car crashes involving 14 luxury sports cars continues to make news headlines.

Police along with nine of the drivers who were involved in the massive wreck that caused millions of dollars of damage worked together over the festive period to reconstruct the accident scene.

  • Just What Did Cause the Crash?

  • Police currently believe that the crash happened after a Ferrari skidded out of control when changing lanes and hit the center railings and triggered a chain-effect of costly collisions. Amazingly the only deaths were to the luxury cars involved as all of the drovers came out with little more than a few scratches and dented prides.

  • The crash turned the following beauties into nothing more than mangled, colorful metal:

    • Eight Ferraris
    • Three Mercedes Benzes
    • One Lamborghini
    • Two non-identified vehicles

Geographic center of the contiguous United States

While any measurement of the exact center of the United States will always be imprecise for a number of reasons, such factors as the exact placement of thousands of miles of changing shoreline, the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS) has produced designated measurements for the center of the United States to the best of its ability to do so.

From the time of the 1912 additions of New Mexico and Arizona, until the 1959 additions of Alaska and Hawaii, the NGS placed the geographic center of the entire United States at a point near the town of Lebanon, Kansas. Since 1959 this location still stands as the Geographic Center of the Contiguous United States, while the geographic center of the entire U.S. moved to a point northeast of Belle Fourche, South Dakota

Marker near Lebanon, Kansas

The marker supposedly indicates the actual point measured by a survey performed in 1918. The measured center is about a half to three-quarters of a mile away on a private farm. The farm's owner did not want tourists trudging through his field, so the marker was placed as close as possible. There is usually an American flag flying on the pole placed on top of the monument. Just to the south of the monument, yards away, is a covered picnic area and small four-pew chapel where a couple can take wedding vows

Schools In

school inInsurance is a must for boat owners and equally important is knowing how it works.  In this section we try and give you a better understanding of how your marine insurance policy works.

Passenger Liability and Medical Payments

Question:

If a passenger on my boat gets hurt how does my insurance protect me?

Answer:

Your passenger liability is a legal liability coverage, meaning it covers you if you were at fault to cause bodily injury to one of the passengers on board your boat.   It does not cover the passengers if they are hurt due to their own  negilgence.

Medical payments is a coverage that will pay automatically regardless of who is at fault.

A nice feature under your passenger liability coverage is it will pay for attorney fees to defend you if a passenger were to sue you, even if the accident was not your fault.

If you ever have any concerns or questions about how your insurance coverage works you should contact your insurance agent to get clarification.

Safety Net

In each issue we have a Column dedicated to the issue of safety. Accidents are going to happen that is just a fact of life. Being in our position, we get to see a lot of accidents and why they occur. It is our belief that a majority of accidents can be prevented. Lack of planning, complacency and lack of experience are the leading causes of accidents. If you have a safety tip or an experience that you would like to be published we would love to have you send it to us. This is certainly an area where sharing will be beneficial to all who read our newsletter.

The below checklist is for owners who are bringing their boats out of winter storage after being laid up but it is certainly a year long checklist as well.

Here's a handy Spring Preparation Checklist to use in getting your boat ready for the boating season.

    BEFORE YOU LAUNCH:

      • Inspect and lubricate seacocks. Hoses and hose clamps should be inspected and replaced as necessary.
      • Replace deteriorated zincs.
      • Inspect prop(s) for dings, pitting and distortion. Make sure cotter pins are secure. Grip the prop and try moving the shaft - if it's loose, the cutlass bearing may need to be replaced.
      • Check to make sure the rudderstock hasn't been bent.
      • Inspect the hull for blisters, distortions and stress cracks.
      • Make sure your engine intake sea strainer is free of corrosion and properly secured.
      • Check the engine shaft and rudder stuffing boxes for looseness. After the boat is launched, be sure to check these as well as through-hulls for leaks.
      • Use a hose to check for deck leaks at ports and hatches. Renew caulk or gaskets as necessary. OUTDRIVES and OUTBOARD ENGINES:
      • Inspect rubber outdrive bellows for cracked, dried and/or deteriorated spots (look especially in the folds), and replace if suspect.
      • Check power steering and power trim oil levels. Replace worn-out zincs.
      • Inspect outer jacket of control cables. Cracks or swelling indicate corrosion and mean that the cable has to be replaced.

    ENGINES AND FUEL SYSTEMS:

      • Inspect fuel lines, including fill and vent hoses, for softness, brittleness or cracking. Check all joints for leaks and make sure all lines are well supported with non-combustible clips or straps with smooth edges.
      • Inspect fuel tanks, fuel pumps and filters for leaks. Clamps should be snug and free of rust. Clean fuel filters.
      • Inspect cooling hoses and fittings for stiffness, rot, leaks and/or cracking. Make sure they fit snugly and are double-clamped.
      • Every few years, remove and inspect exhaust manifold for corrosion.
      • Clean and tighten electrical connections, especially both ends of battery cables. Wire-brush battery terminals and fill cells with distilled water.
      • Inspect bilge blower hose for leaks.

    SAILBOAT RIGGING:

      • Inspect fittings for cracks and rust. Inspect wire halyards and running backstays for "fishhooks" and rust.
      • Remove tape on turnbuckles and lubricate threads, preferably with Teflon. Replace old tape with fresh tape.
      • Recaulk through-deck chainplates as necessary (generally, once a decade).

    TRAILERS:

      • Inspect tire treads and sidewalls for cracks or lack of tread and replace as necessary. Check air pressure. Don't forget the spare!
      • Inspect bearings and repack as necessary.
      • Test tail and back-up lights. Test winch to make sure it's working properly.
      • Inspect trailer frame for rust. Sand and paint to prevent further deterioration.

    MISCELLANEOUS:

      • Check expiration dates on flares and fire extinguishers.
      • Check stove and remote tanks for loose fittings and leaking hoses.
      • Inspect bilge pump and float switch to make sure it's working properly.
      • Inspect dock and anchor lines for chafing.
      • Update or replace old charts, waterway guides.
      • Check shore power cable connections for burns, which indicates the cable needs to be replaced.
      • Make sure your boating license and/or registration is up to date. Don't forget your trailer tags.
      • Review your boat insurance policy and update coverage if needed. Be sure you have fuel spill insurance coverage.
      • Make sure you have a properly sized and wearable life jackets in good condition for each passenger, including kids and pets.
