Public Hearings Scheduled for Vocational Rehabilitation State PlanPublic hearings on vocational rehabilitation services have been scheduled throughout the state. More Missouri Students Succeeding on Advanced Placement Exams The number of students earning qualifying grades on Advanced Placement (AP) exams has more than doubled in Missouri in the past decade. Last year, 5,554 Missouri graduates scored a 3 or better on one or more AP exams during high school, compared to 2,566 graduates in 2002, according to the annual AP Report to the Nation. Read more
Pilot Program Aims to Put Missouri Students on Path to Career Success Preparing students in Missouri for the jobs of the future is the focus of a new partnership that is bringing together educators, policymakers and employers. State leaders participating in the Pathways to Prosperity Network continue their work on developing a system of "career pathways" designed to help high-school students succeed in college, other types of training and the workplace. The program is a collaboration between the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Harvard's Graduate School of Education, and business and community leaders. Read more
State Education Department Recognizes Schools Eleven Missouri schools were recognized in January as Professional Learning Communities Exemplary Schools by state education officials for their outstanding performance in implementing the professional learning community process. These schools promote cultures focused on learning with collaborative teams and effectively using data to increase student achievement. View the list of schools
Lee's Summit Educator Recognized in First Annual 'Leaders to Learn From' Report A Lee's Summit educator was honored last month as one of 15 top school district leaders in the nation in Education Week's first annual "Leaders to Learn From" report. Kyle Pace, an instructional technology specialist, was recognized for his work using social media to improve professional development for teachers in the Lee's Summit School District. Read more
Two Missouri Students Recognized for Outstanding Volunteer Service Missouri's top two youth volunteers of 2013 were named in February by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. The state's 2013 youth volunteer awardees are: Sophia Greenwalt, Reeds Spring Middle School, Reeds Spring R-VI School District; and Sarah Sutherlin, Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School, St. Louis. 40th Annual Conference on the Young Years
The Conference on the Young Years is taking place March 7-9. There will be networking with early childhood professionals and gathering new ideas and information that can assist with young children and their families. The committee has secured a track specific to the Missouri Learning Standards and how teachers can incorporate this information into the work they do every day. This is a unique opportunity for professionals to come together from across the state and listen to national speakers talk passionately about early childhood. Learn more |

Goal #3 - Missouri will prepare, develop and support effective educators.
Teacher of the Year Clinic and 2013-14 Application Available The Missouri Teacher of the Year Program is conducted annually by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in conjunction with the National Teacher of the Year Program. Designed to focus public attention on excellence in teaching, the Teacher of the Year competition is the oldest nationwide program honoring classroom teachers. This year's deadline for applications is July 1. A Teacher of the Year Clinic is also scheduled in Jefferson City on May 3. Learn more
Leadership Academy
Be a part of the yearlong Leadership Academy with a new class beginning in June! The Leadership Academy promotes the improvement of a leader's performance as articulated in Missouri's Leaders Standards and Quality Indicators and focuses on the seven Essential Principles of Effective Educator Evaluation.
