504 Training for District Employees

The 3rd Annual Training for Section 504 Site Coordinators took place Monday, January 13 from 8:30-11:45. The goal is to make the 504 Plan more robust as described in SFUSD's Significant Disproportionality - Coordinated Early Intervening Services (SD-CEIS) Plan. The training focused on positive behavior supports and academic interventions for students in the general education environment. 504 Plans are for student's with disabilities who do not require specialized instruction (IEP) but do require assurance of access to curriculum. A 504 Plan is created to outline specific accessibility requirements. Students with 504 Plans do not require specialized instruction, but, similar to the IEP, a 504 Plan is updated annually to ensure that the student is receiving the most effective accommodations for his/her specific circumstances. The training included a review of the 504 process starting with eligibility, to the evaluation process, implementation and monitoring of the Plan.  The revised Section 504 Resource Guide was distributed and is available on the Student, Family and Community Support Department website. Special Education iPad Initiative (SPII)
Mary Davis, SLP

In the Fall of 2012, twenty enthusiastic Speech Language Pathologists turned in their district laptops and joined the Special Education iPad Pilot. What was previously referred to as a "pilot" has grown into an initiative with close to sixty iPad users. SpEd itinerant staff including Speech Language Pathologists, Occupation Therapists and Assistive Technology Specialists make up a large portion of the initiative. The Special Education iPad Initiative participants (otherwise know as SPII) use the iPad as a tool to engage students during therapy sessions, support progress on IEP goals and as a productivity device for writing assessments, emails and calendaring. SPII participants collect data using applications allowing for close monitoring of progress on goals. Check out the 2014 Special Education SPII report with quotes from participants by clicking here.

DRDP: Desired Results Developmental Profile

The Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) Access Assessment System assists California's infant and preschool special education programs in supporting children's learning and development, ensuring children are making progress. Who participates? The general implementation of the DRDP Access Assessment System in California requires all infants and toddlers with IEPs be assessed using the instrument twice a year (fall and spring). SFUSD Special Education Services submitted its annual DRDP report to the CDE in January reporting 564 infants and toddlers. Our December report captured 107 more birth to preschool age students than last year. Better identification procedures, increased accountability, comprehensive assessment completion and a dedicated team of educators at the infant toddler level has lead to our exciting DRDP results!
