Miraloma Elementary Celebrates Inclusion
Ron Machado, Principal of Miraloma Elementary School, was recently interviewed about how his schoool celebrated Inclusive Schools Week, Dec. 2nd-6th. Ron's response? "I am proud to be a part of a school community that takes pride in being inclusive every day!" He began with what the Miraloma community does daily to support inclusion such as ability awareness classes, all students spending time in every classroom, mentoring programs and "mix-up" days when students eat lunch with students in other classrooms. Ron explained that co-teaching happens daily and students genuinely care abut each other at Miraloma. "At Miraloma Elementary School inclusion truly is the norm." Student Achievement
Co-teaching thrives at James Lick
The special education team at James Lick that includes Jennifer HeinDemausehas (Content Specialist), Thea Horner, Christine Gage, Airika Castaneda, Shain Rau, Leyla Momeny, Ron Ayson have been hard at work this school year. Now in their third year of co-teaching, the team has mastered the structure of the master schedule. How do they do it? Classes are organized by subject and grade level, allowing a full continuum of services is available to all students. The special education teachers have common prep periods with their co-teaching general education partners, which allows them time to plan how they will jointly deliver their lessons. Just spend a few minutes in their classrooms and it is evident how much planning they put into their lessons and collaboration! These talented educators are also supporting colleagues in deepening their understanding of inclusive practices. The recently presented to the general education faculty on the topic of accommodations. Their presentation included very convincing simulations of what it feels like to be a student with a disability, strategies for using various accommodations effectively in the classroom, and how to interpret and implement accommodations listed on a student's IEP. The dedication of the special education team at James Lick will no doubt have a lasting impact on their students and their school.
