A Big Thank You
Katy Franklin
Huge thank you to Katy Franklin for seven years of service advocating for the students and families of San Francisco Unified as president of the CAC. Katy went above and beyond to ensure SFUSD students receiving Special Education Services were receiving high quality services during her time as president. Her motivation derived from the desire to see all students succeed. Thank you Katy for your unwavering commitment to our students!
Teamwork
USF and SFUSD

Professor Chris Thomas and Coordinator Amy Fogliani from University of San Francisco, School of Education have been instrumental in supporting the districts Behavior RtI initiative this Fall. SFUSD agreed to spread the word about the programs offered through University and they in turn provided us with a space large enough to accommodate the trainings (also equipped with audio visual equipment). Thank you both for your time, the space and the excellent partnership.

Access and Equity

Response to Intervention 2013/14 Kick-off!

Last week was a busy week for Response to Intervention Trainings!  On September 24 & 25, 18 schools joined Dos Cohort for their first year of RTI training at the University of San Francisco.  The 25 schools in Premier Cohort began their second year of training on September 26 & 27 at St. Mary's Cathedral.  These schools will continue to work with trainers, Diana Browning Wright and Dr. Clay Cook through the 2013-2014 school year.  Supporting the idea of Access and Equity to all SFUSD students these 18 schools will be coached, supported and trained on how to provide tiered levels of behavior support to all students using a Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI2) model. This model is one of SFUSD's six strategies for success according to 2013-2015 Strategic Plan.

Student Acheivement
Gateway High School Fostering a Love of Reading

Carrie Pike, Paul Heasman and Lynne Roberts, Gateway High School Charter teachers, believe there is a strong and passionate reader in all of us! Their Reading Comprehension class fully embraces this belief by helping students with and without Special Education Services build their  reading comprehension skills through a variety of strategies. These dedicated teachers expose students to new and proven reading methods to not only help students understand a wide variety of texts, but to ignite a life long love of reading in their students. For more information on the Reading Comprehension class at Gateway click here.

Accountability

Early Childhood, Continuum of Learning

We are excited to share that SFUSD provides a variety of learning options to best meet the needs of the child. Eligible preschool age children (3-5 years) with a disability are offered a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment based on their individual needs. Early Childhood Special Education, otherwise know as ECSE, offers a full continuum of service delivery options in the Early Education setting. Services include: related services, Preschool Language Centers, Preschool Autism Resource Team, Itinerant Early Childhood Teachers, Preschool Language and Learning Classrooms, Inclusion/Integrated Preschool Classrooms, and Special Day Classrooms.  The goal is to better serve 3-5 year olds in the natural setting of general education to the maximum extent possible. A talented team of Early Childhood Special Educators monitors and supports IEP goal progress in a supported SFUSD Early Education setting with student's typically developing peers. For more information click here.
