Alice Fong Yu
Literacy For Struggling Readers Program
In an effort to catch readers before they fall behind, teachers at Alice Fong Yu K-8 have implemented a coordinated tutoring program that supplements classroom instruction for students needing additional support. Students are referred by their classroom teacher and receive additional individual and group instruction. The supplemental reading program, Literacy for Struggling Readers (LSR), was developed by Robert Ruth, a Mild/Moderate Special Education teacher at Alice Fong Yu.

Important Reminders
At the beginning of February, case managers should have received a letter for each of the students on their case load who is an English Learner. Letters were sent to principals at each site for distribution during the week of 2/4-8. The letter must be placed in the front of the student's brown folder. This letter will serve as a reminder, as you prepare for the student's IEP, that both English and the student's primary language needs and performance should be discussed throughout the IEP. For a form by form guide, see the "SEIS IEP and Reclassification Guidelines for Students Who Receive English Learner and Special Education Services" located in the SEIS documents library.
For more resources on IEP development for ELs, please see the "IEP Development" Folder on MPD Sharepoint site.

Response to Intervention with Diana Browning Wright
The RTI Premier Cohort met for their third time on January 14 and 15. Sites rated themselves on their current implementation of Tier I universal supports. The 26 schools in the Premier Cohort completed their first Universal Screening on Review 360 with an excellent 80% completion rate. Participants are now using information to identify students who may need further intervention. The cohort also learned about progress monitoring. Progress monitoring helps sites base decisions on data which ultimately leads to improved outcomes. The next RTI PD will take place on March 19 & 20.
