After school on February 7, Rhys Dobson and his family came to the DDRC main office to pick up his new Macbook Pro laptop. Rhys received the device through the Watson Family Foundation, an assistance program that is managed by the Calgary Foundation and distributed by the DDRC.
Because Rhys has difficulty writing, the transition from elementary to middle school this year has been a challenging one. Cheryl Payne, Rhys' mother, would spend hours scribing for him so he could finish his school projects on time. The whole process was very discouraging for Rhys who has tons of ideas, but struggles getting them onto paper.
The teachers at his school immediately identified Rhys' need for a laptop to help him along in a classroom setting, but purchasing a brand new laptop that would be compatible with the school's systems is a large cost for most families. At last, after months of frustration, Rhys and his teachers will have a simple solution to all of their past difficulties.
When it was finally time to present Rhys with his computer, he was so excited that he could barely wait to take it out of the box and give it a try. The DDRC is thrilled to be a part of success stories like these, and we wish Rhys the best of his luck with his new tool for learning!
