Bainbridge Island at work... together! February 28, 2013
|
|
Greetings!
Next week I'll be in Austin, Texas at the Global Coworking Unconference Conference! That's too much of a mouthful, so GCUC is pronounced "juicy." Since I will be gone most of the week, I will venture beyond my comfort zone to practice tweeting some of my favorite takeaways via @officexpats. Not sure when or if next week's newsletter will go out, but I'll eventually report back on my adventures from the Austin Music Hall. :-)
Tuesdays@noon in March: The fear of public speaking is legendary. Overcoming or dealing with the fear, and honing your presentation skills can open doors and build your professional credibility. The Tues@noon workshops in March explore this powerful skillset, covering audience rapport, strategic storytelling, and how to build powerful visuals to support your message. Learn more here.
March 5: Bob Linz shares how to become a relaxed and powerful speaker. Speaking from a relaxed place is a learnable skill set and builds deep rapport with an audience, whether it is a small crowd of potential clients or a one-on-one presentation. Come learn some simple tools to put yourself at ease, increase your effectiveness, and begin your new life as a relaxed and powerful speaker.

Kombi Corp to co-locate at OfficeXpats
In a growing trend, small and start-up companies often co-locate with coworking spaces to share resources and offer a dynamic, diverse environment for their employees (in fact, coworking has been called the new "garage" for startups). We quietly announced at the member meeting last week that Kombi Corp will be moving in to OfficeXpats. It is now official. Kombi is an island software company bringing a fresh approach to mobile business called Adaptive Point of Service (APoS), and its founder, John Eisenhauer, has been growing hi-tech and green businesses on Bainbridge Island for many years. We are excited to have Kombi joining us, and we will invite them to happy hours in the coming weeks to get them introduced as often as possible before the mid-April move-in. This also means that there will be some changes to our physical space. Kombi will occupy what is now the Event Room (our classroom), and we will build a windowed wall to create a new large conference room at the west end (near the door to the balcony). This new space will double as a "quiet" room for coworking when it is not in use for classes or events. |
"Follow the Money" returns March 14 to explore local economy and crowdfunding
Thursday, March 14, 7-8:30pm: In partnership with the Sustainable Business Network of Bainbridge, we continue the evening salon discussion series called "Follow the Money: busting myths to get at the truths of our economy." The program for March starts with watching a few short videos together to inform our discussion. We take a look at a challenge of assumptions about economies of scale, and then get updates about crowdfunding.
- TEDxDirigo, Why we Can't Shop Our Way to a Better Economy. Stacy Mitchell from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR), challenges corporate consolidation of the economy and champions policies to nurture community-scaled enterprise.
- TEDx Victoria: Crowdfunding 101. Victoria Westcott talks about how crowdfunding is changing the way that we create, produce and distribute our creative work.
- Bloomberg Taking Stock: Startups and access to Capital. Indiegogo Founder Slava Rubin and Firstmark Capital Founder Lawrence D. Lenihan discuss the impact of the Jobs Act on crowdfunding and investor protection.
Monthly meetings are on 2nd Thursdays, 7-8:30pm at OfficeXpats. Everyone is welcome, the event is free, and please register.
