Bainbridge Island at work... together!                                                            January 30, 2013

Greetings!

As predicted, "Creating WordPress sites" is a hot topic, and registrations for February's WordPress class are filling up fast. The 15 free slots for OfficeXpats members are just about gone, but there are still some seats left at $40 for the 4 week series. So REGISTER NOW!  Also, check out our new calendar and event list! We've tried a number of calendars over the past year, and we are much happier with this one. And of course if you want to "remember" a particular event, you can load it into your own calendar. Speaking of frustrations with "the internets," please take our quick survey on your pains, and maybe we'll have a class for that (more below).

In the four Tuesday@noon workshops in February, Annette Walker will take you step-by-step through the basics of building and updating a WordPress site. These workshops are designed for hands-on, so you can build your website during the sessions, and at the end of the 4-part workshop you could have a fresh, professional website that reflects you and your business. WordPress is friendly and you don't have to be a techie or designer to use it. But you can also attend the workshop without a computer, and just watch and learn. Handouts and links to resources and tips will be provided for ongoing assistance.

To follow the instructions for building a website in this course you will need to have a hosted domain. For anyone who wants assistance with picking a domain name or getting hosting, email Annette to schedule a time (annette@astonishinc.com).

Seating is limited for this hands-on course; only 15 member and 15 non-member registrations are available . Register now for all 4 sessions.

Help Annette target this class for YOU!
Please take this  quick survey (just 5 questions) to help her fit the specific needs of the attendees.

Does the Internet sometimes drive you crazy?
Do you suspect you could be doing much more with your email program but don't know who to ask? Would you venture deeper into social media if you could get answers to basic questions? We are thinking about adding beginner or intermediate (personal or business-focused) classes for social media, email, cloud computing, online photo management, etc.

A 12x12 vacation photo album created online
Help us target your needs by taking this quick survey. Or, tell a friend who might need some support. I selfishly am hoping there will be a bunch of people wanting my extensive expertise on creating and printing photo albums from Shutterfly. I don't get anything from Shutterfly for saying this, but I make amazing photo albums with real (not virtual) pages.

And by the way, this survey is kind of an experiment too! Annette (our fearless leader of the WordPress classes) gave us some quick instructions that allowed us to create a survey using Google Drive and then embed it into our web page (no specialized 3rd party app like Survey Monkey needed), and the responses get loaded into a Google Drive spreadsheet. Cool, huh?
OfficeXpats nominated for Chamber of Commerce Small Business of 2012

This is not breaking news, but we forgot to announce it last week! No, we didn't win the top slot at the January 19 awards dinner, but with just over a year in business, it is a distinct honor to be nominated and we don't take the acknowledgement lightly. We have a great working partnership with the Chamber-sponsored Bainbridge Business Connection, which meets in our space on Friday mornings at 7:30am. And Rex Oliver, CEO of the Chamber, shows up often with Mickey Molnaire, the visitor center manager, at the weekly happy hour to connect with members. Many a serendipitous bit of opportunity has been explored at these

gatherings.

As promised, here is a picture of Jason in a suit and tie (with Els Heyne, Chamber   Executive Board member). The honor of Small Business of the Year was awarded to Shirvan Rug Gallery on Winslow Way. We congratulate long-time business owners Adem and Birgul Solak on their contributions and recognition.
