Bainbridge Island at work... together! January 16, 2013
|
|
Greetings!
Coworking 101: JELLIES are temporary local collaboration events free of charge for coworkers of all kinds, typically organized in homes or coffee shops. JELLIES are often a community-building precursor to a permanent coworking space. Worldwide JELLYWEEK (January 14-20, 2013) celebrates this tradition globally. Without identifying it as such, OfficeXpats created a JELLY a few weeks ago as "Think Week." We encourage any networks of entrepreneurs, change-makers, and techies, etc, to organize a local event to communicate, collaborate, and create new partnerships and action on the global level.
Coworking 201: Harvard Business Review has a new article out that features coworking as the Third Wave of Virtual Work (also generically called the "urban hub"). "McCulloch saw that a work hub... provided the one aspect of a traditional office she sorely missed: the company of other professionals. We are seeing a proliferation of such workspaces, specifically designed to connect and inspire people who generally work alone."
Our monthly "Make Art at the Office" debuts this week on Thursday evening (see below), but even if art is not your thing, every Thursday evening is now open for member events and late coworking. Ignite speakers workshops are in full swing on Tuesdays, alternating between afternoons and evenings. Don't miss out on the January specials for memberships. Please to someone who might need it. Have a great week.

When was the last time you played with art?
A number of years ago, when I lived in Seattle, I would have a monthly art date with my art mentor and best friend Linda. Together we went through a number of phases and crafts, including scrapbooking, jewelry making, and collaging. Read more...
Make a date to make art. Two opportunities THIS week:
Thursday, January 17, 6-8:30pm, Art Night at the Office: Join me to collage (no experience needed), or bring your own art project to work on independently. No charge; small donations accepted for supplies. Amy Aspell will attend too, and can answer questions about her Sunday workshop (below).
Sunday, January 20, 1:00 - 4:00 pm, Vision Collage workshop: Set aside time to reflect upon intentions for yourself and your ideal life. Amy Aspell guides you in a reflection-meditation process, provides all the necessary materials, and offers tips for the tools and processes. No art experience necessary. Early bird registration by Jan 18th:$25 for one, $40 for two registering together. After Jan 18th, $30. Register: 206-780-5825, Aspella@comcast.net.

"Your business and the law" for January workshops
January's theme for our weekly workshops is about setting up a good legal foundation for your business, protecting assets and continuity, and fending off threats.
January 22, Patents, copyrights, and trademarks: What are they? How are they used, either offensively or defensively? Martin Garthwaite is a Registered Patent Attorney who has done work for RealNetworks, T-Mobile, and the Master Builder's Association. Martin lives on Bainbridge Island and was recruited for this presentation by Xpat Israel Sanchez (Coach Izzy) after Martin helped with the successful defense of Izzy's book title. Read more, and see Martin's website.
