Bainbridge Island at work... together!                                                            January 3, 2013

Greetings!

Happy New Year! Last week's Think Week may have started another new tradition: the economic discussion called "Follow the Money" is now going to happen as an evening salon held monthly on second Thursdays, so keep it in mind for next week. And note that OfficeXpats is the featured venue on the First Friday Art Walk this month (this Friday). Shawn Stark's stills from a short film will be on display, and you may recognize one of her "characters" (see below). Please join us for too for our monthly Open House, a first Thursday event, for a drink and to meet other coworkers, and first-timers get a gift card for a free day.

A lot of thought is going into plans for 2013, and there is one piece we can share right now. Starting this week, we will experiment with staying open late on Thursdays. So, you can join one of our Thursday evening events, or invite people to your own event, or just stay late to get work done. If folks are around, we will stay open to 9pm (and we may close up early if it's just us, so please let us know if you leave and need to come back).

Good news for memberships purchased in January (or existing members who "level up"). When you buy a membership based on "X" days each month, you will also get an equivalent number of "Xtra" days to use throughout the year. For instance, if you sign up or upgrade to Flextime (8 days/month), you get 8 full day gift cards to use anytime throughout the year. Getting a full time membership is even sweeter: in January you can get After Hours at no extra charge ($75 value), giving you 24/7 access to the office. Ask us for details.

SpiderLily Design hosts January BBC (Evening Edition)

Bainbridge Business Connection (BBC) networking group now also meets for an evening edition on first Thursdays, immediately following the OfficeXpats Open House, and we are currently focusing on learning business storytelling. Anyone can volunteer to host the meeting by signing up to bring appetizers and drinks. As the host, you make a succinct and interesting 5-minute presentation about your business to the group.

This Thursday (January 3) at 6pm, Brian Creamer, co-owner of SpiderLily Web Design, presents a brief overview of responsive website design. This is an important new technology enabling one website to automatically optimize itself for any window size whether it is for a PC, laptop, tablet, or smart phone. Zooming is no longer required on mobile devices. There is no need for a separate mobile specific website. In an increasingly mobile-centric world, you cannot afford to be left behind. Brian grew up on Bainbridge Island and is a member of the BBC, the Chamber of Commerce, and the wonderful mystic tribe known as OfficeXpats (sic).

First Friday Art Walk is January 4th, 6-8pm

For this first Art Walk of 2013, make the trip around the corner from Winslow and add art and dinner at the Pavilion to your First Friday experience. Enjoy a drink and appetizers while chatting with the artist, and then pick up a 2-for-1 dinner coupon to settle in at Soup'r Burger.

Upstairs in OfficeXpats, Shawn Stark, photographer and filmmaker, is featured in the January Art Walk with her exhibit of high-resolution still shots excerpted from a short film. Each photo standing alone tells one type of story in exquisite detail, and is grouped in series of related stills to tell a different story hinting of the high-speed motion it came from.

"Your business and the law" for January workshops

January's theme for our weekly workshops is about the contracts for setting up a business, protecting assets and continuity, and fending off threats.

January 8: Protecting business reputation and continuity, presented by Elizabeth M. Toglia. Elizabeth will discuss legal and non-legal strategies for addressing Internet-based defamation, and how best to ensure that our business can continue even when we are unavailable because of travel or illness. Elizabeth has practiced law in Alaska since 1994 and Washington since 2006, the year she opened her Bainbridge Island office (Elizabeth has lived on Bainbridge since 1999).  Elizabeth's practice focuses on life and estate planning for non-traditional couples and families.
