Bainbridge Island at work... together! December 12, 2012
|
|
Greetings!
The members holiday party was SO much fun; check out the photos (or add some if you were there). Now we are on to planning the new year with a featured Art Walk in January and a Chamber of Commerce After Hours in March. More on those events in future weeks. For now, it's all about Think Week, those contemplative days after Christmas and before New Years. We invite you to join us for three free days of coworking, to think by yourself, or for the events that help you think with others.
A Think Week Highlight: Follow the Money
OfficeXpats is partnering with the Sustainable Business Network of Bainbridge to create a new salon-style discussion series called "Follow the Money: busting myths to get at the truths of our economy." The first discussion takes place on Thursday, December 27, 11am-12:30pm at OfficeXpats, during Think Week. Monthly meetings thereafter will take place on 3rd Thursdays, 5-6:30pm at OfficeXpats.

As the title implies, instead of reacting to sound bites such as "fiscal cliff," we will search for--and work to understand--the underlying principles at play, for instance the coming explosion in the cost of paying interest on the federal deficit, or the impact of a possible breakup of the EU. To do this, we may decide to look at the very theory of interest and debt, both historically and how it plays out in other countries today, as in Greece. Participants should be motivated by curiosity, by desire for preparedness and resiliency in our personal and business financial health, and because we are intrigued with learning from the thoughtful ideas of our peers. Tuesday@noon: Looking back; looking forward
 | Karla Smith, CPA |
Tuesdays@noon in December: In a very packed hour this week, Karen Casey helped us sort through our values and translate them into a rough draft of our purpose. We will continue this work during Think Week, and Karen will join us again on Wednesday (yes, the day after Christmas) at 11am to take some next steps in this important work.
 | Kelly Deis, MBA |
Our final workshop of this series on 12/18 is "Understanding the financial story of your business." A company's balance sheet and P&L tell the story about the health of our business, and a budget tells us where we are going. Kelly Deis of Turning Point Financial and Karla Smith share financial tools and strategies for how to translate business goals into your budget for the new year, how to plan for the challenges that have big tax consequences (such as owner draw vs. payroll), and how to create a day-to-day cash flow dashboard. Both Karla and Kelly are QuickBooks Pro Advisors.

Remember Scott James, the wonderful MC from our Anniversary celebration? He and some partners have formed Trash Backwards, with a great web site that gives many layers of ideas for what to do with excess stuff. And now, this Saturday at 2pm, in the midst of the biggest consumer push of the year, you can check out the annual Trash Backwards gift boutique! Come shop for friends and family, bring like-new items to share with the community if you'd like, everything is free! Open to anyone looking for gifts to give, or looking to give gifts.
