Triple Freeport status in Round Rock

Our economic development team collaborated with the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce to help the area obtain Freeport Tax Exemption via the Round Rock Independent School District. The RR ISD trustees voted to grant the exemption last week.

Combined with previous tax exemptions from the city and county, the triple Freeport status for goods and materials is a powerful tool for attracting manufacturing companies and jobs to the area.  Click here to view the press release.

Chamber welcomes 25 entrepreneurs

Through Innovate Austin, and in collaboration with WeWork and Dropbox, we welcomed the Mandela Washington Fellows yesterday, June 24, to kick off their six week program for leadership training, networking, and skills building. The Fellows, hosted by the University of Texas at Austin's International Office, have the opportunity to connect with our collaborative Austin start up scene, explore the city's entrepreneur ecosystem, and participate in a pitch competition.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), part of President Obama's commitment to invest in the future of Africa. The Chamber's Michele Skelding opened and presented the "Welcome to Austin - The Innovation Economy" workshop. The event included comments from Mikaela Ulmer, 10-year-old CEO of Bee Sweet Lemonade and recipient of our A-List Rising Star Entrepreneur Award.

Another step forward for more flight options!

Last week, Austin City Council directed their staff to begin negotiations to expand operations at the south terminal at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Once everything is approved, as soon as a few months from now, more gates will be available for carriers to provide more flights and destinations.

Our Air Service Task Force, chaired by Doug Driskill, advocated in favor this project. A special thanks to Pete Winstead, Paul Trahan, Mark Whaling, and Eric Overton for showing their support at City Council's meeting on June 18th. View more in the Austin American-Statesman.
