If spring cleaning has left you with materials you're not sure how or where to dispose, we're here to help! Here's a quick resource guide for our own as well as community programs that can help you recycle more and waste less.

Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day


WHEN: Saturday, May 21, 2016 : 8am-12pm

WHERE: The Public Safety Training Facility: 8349 Reichs Ford Road, Frederick

WHO: Frederick County residents (not for business wastes)



WHAT: The Department of Solid Waste Management offers County residents free disposal of items such as pool, garden and household chemicals, fluorescent bulbs (compact and tube), old fuel, stains & sealants, solvents & thinners, rechargeable batteries, and much more.



(Items not accepted at this event include alkaline batteries, medicine, paint and motor oil; other recycling or disposal options exist for these materials.)

Kid's Closet Consignment Sale



WHEN: Thursday, May 12 through Sunday, May 15

WHERE: Great Frederick Fairgrounds, 797 East Patrick Street, Frederick

WHO: Open to anyone, no charge

Free Document Shredding



WHEN: Saturday, May 14, 9am - 12pm

WHERE: Frederick County Bank, 165A Thomas Johnson Drive, Frederick

WHO: Open to anyone, no charge

WHAT: Shredding sensitive documents helps protect against identity theft and fraud- but shredded paper can be tricky to recycle. Shred events are a convenient option for safe, efficient recycling! Participants may bring up to three standard-sized boxes of paper items, which will be shredded securely on-site. Ideal for any documents that contain sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers, date of birth, addresses or bank account numbers. WHO: Open to anyone, no charge; donations will be accepted for the Humane Society's Emergency Assistance Program in Frederick County.

Recycling Drop-Off

The Department of Solid Waste Management's recycling drop-off site located at 9031 Reichs Ford Road offers a convenient way to recycle many materials that cannot be collected as part of the County's curbside recycling program. Drop-off recycling is available for:
  • Appliances: "White goods" such as refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, air conditioners, hot water heaters, etc. (Not Accepted: small, non metal-body appliances such as blenders, alarm clocks, etc.     Automotive Materials: Oil filters, antifreeze, lead-acid batteries and large rigid, plastic car parts (such as bumpers).
  • Bulky/Oversized Rigid Plastics: Items such as: lawn furniture, large plastic toys (such as outdoor play sets), coolers, kiddie pools, plastic buckets and storage totes, plastic shelving, laundry baskets, broken trash cans, etc. Even large rigid automotive plastics such as car bumpers! Youth/infant car seats are accepted if the straps, padding and fabric have been removed. (Not Accepted: Items with motors and electronic components, PVC or vinyl items, non-rigid materials, such as rubber hoses, tarps, landscape edging or any other soft, flexible plastics.)
  • Flexible Foam: Foam carpet padding, foam couch cushions, foam-only mattresses. (Not Accepted: Jute/fiber carpet padding, Styrofoam)
  • Machine Oils: Motor oil, transmission and hydraulic fluid, kerosene, diesel fuel.
  • Scrap Metal: Most any item that is made of at least 75% metal, such as metal shelving, filing cabinets, bicycles, fencing, lawn mowers, wire hangers, grills, swing sets, aluminum lawn chairs, toasters, etc.
  • Yard Waste: Small amounts (materials that fit inside a vehicle or bed of a standard truck, not trailer or larger loads) of yard waste can be dropped off in the convenience dumpster labeled for these materials at the recycling drop off site. The primary yard waste recycling area is accessed by entering through the landfill facility's main gate.
