A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words...
and maybe $100 too, in our new coloring book contest!
Through March 13, local K-12 students are asked to create a black-and-white drawing based on the Department of Solid Waste Management's motto of "Recycle More, Waste Less." Selected entries will be featured in a coloring book to be distributed in the community, promoting the value of the "three R's": reduce, reuse and recycle.
To participate in the "Recycle More. Waste Less." Coloring Book Contest, students may draw a picture (but not color it in) that meets at least one of the following objectives of the contest:
- show ways to create less waste (such as through reducing or reusing materials)
- promote the overall value of recycling
- explain what is/isn't recyclable
Entries may be hand drawn or created digitally; all submissions must be solely comprised of original artwork by the participating student. Submissions must be received by 4pm, Friday March 13 and need to be accompanied by an official entry form.
Entries may be delivered or mailed to: Coloring Book Contest, Dept. of Solid Waste Management, 9031 Reichs Ford Road, Frederick, MD 21704.
Submissions will be judged in 4 grade-level categories: K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Each category will award a first place prize of $100, a second place prize of $50 and a third place prize of $25. (Prizes funded through a grant from Waste Management Recycle America.)
The announcement of contest winners will be made on Earth Day, April 22, 2015. Coloring books will be printed for distribution at DSWM and community events.
