This beautifully-crafted 3-stage compost bin was built by local resident Matt Davis and his daughter Frannie. Attend our class to learn how they did it, as well as see examples of lots of other composting methods- from compact indoor units to big, open piles, store-bought or homemade, we've got the dirt on how to compost!
Winners Announced for Our Recycling Essay Contest!
Looking for a reason to recycle? Let these four local students tell you theirs!

Congratulations to the winners of our Recycling Essay Contest!  418 entries were received from public, private and home school students across the county.  Of these, four were selected to be published in the Frederick News Post today, Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22.  Take a look on page A7 to admire the work of these budding young writers and environmentalists!  The winners are:

Grade K-2: Grace Steffensen, grade 2 at Middletown Primary School
"If you have something that you can recycle, don't put it in the trash! Make our world better by recycling."

Grade 3-5: Mary Warner, grade 5 at the Trinity School of Frederick
"The next time you think about throwing out your water bottle or a piece of paper, think about how recycling matters!"

Grades 6-8: Sophie Johnson, grade 6 at Urbana Middle School
"...if every person plays a small role in keeping our world clean, it will become better than it is today."

Grades 9-12: Huai Cing, grade 12 at Frederick High School

Thanks for Recycling 46.7%!

Frederick County's recycling rate for 2012 was 46.7% (the most recent data approved by the Maryland Department of the Environment) That means we're getting closer to recycling half of the waste generated locally- which added up to 249,907,660 pounds of recyclable material in 2012!
Every bottle, box, can and jar makes a difference, so thank you for knowing what's recyclable and "putting it in the blue"!
