Greetings!
It was wonderful to receive this message from Selectman Dave Upton ... "With no injuries or serious property damage associated with the storm having been reported at this time, we expect the Town to go forward with its regularly scheduled business for the rest of this week."
Congratulations, Nelson! We have proved that we come from hardy stock.
Just a reminder: Trick or Treating will take place in town this evening from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm. Please have tons of fun and be safe!

 | Trick or Treat for UNICEF
| submitted by Ms. Benner, K2 teacher
Dear Nelson Community, Each year students in the Nelson School participate in several service projects. Our fall global service project this year will once again be Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF and you may see students carrying around their little Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) boxes on Halloween. Our school goal, as in the past, is based upon participation, rather than a monetary goal. We are trying to empower our young people and help them to see that every person truly can help to make a difference by pitching in to support a cause. So it doesn't matter whether they collect three pennies or twenty dollars, either way they will be successful. We are also discussing the fact that simply letting people know about the program is in itself a way to help, therefore no one should feel any pressure to contribute if they prefer not to or are not able to. Over the years we have found that the children are very excited to participate and we have received positive feedback from community members about how the children spoke to the project. Students and families are also encouraged to make individual decisions regarding their participation. Some prefer not to bring the boxes with them trick-or-treating but instead choose to put some of their own spare change into their boxes and this is perfectly fine as well. So, we thank you in advance for your support, financially if you choose to contribute, but more importantly for giving the children the opportunity to tell you about what they've learned about the organization and its purpose. For many it's the first time they will be doing something of this nature and doing so to friendly and welcoming faces makes all the difference. Please feel free to contact Cindy Benner (cbenner@sau29.org) (the staff contact for this year's project) if you have any questions or feedback. We will be sure to share our results with you in early November.

 | Voter ID Now Required | submitted by Rick Church, Town Moderator Voter Identification Required at the polls November 6th 2012
Citizens of the United States and of Nelson have an opportunity to exercise their right to choose their government on November 6, 2012. Voting in Nelson will take place at the Town Hall from 8AM to 7PM. As your moderator I am hoping for a very good turn out for the election.
This year there is a new requirement (RSA 659:13) that our ballot clerks ask voters to present a photo ID when checking in at the polling place. We practiced this at the State Primary Election in September, but now the provisions of the new law turn from advisory ones into requirements. Fortunately, the law provides for a large number of valid photo IDs. This is the list of acceptable photo IDs from the Office of the Attorney General:
a. A driver's license issued by any state, even if expired. b. An ID card issued by NH DMV under RSA 260:21 c. A non-driver photo ID issued by any state, even if expired. d. A United States Armed Services ID Card. e. A United States passport, even if expired. f. Any other valid photo ID card issued by federal, state, county or municipal government. g. A valid student ID h. Other photo ID deemed legitimate by the Supervisors of the Checklist, the Moderator or the Clerk.
If a voter does not have a photo ID, verification of that voter's identity by one of the voting officials in (h) or by the voter's signing a "challenged voter affidavit" will enable an eligible voter to cast a ballot.
Every effort will be made to allow eligible voters to cast ballots. I hope to see all of you at the polls.

 | First Tuesday Tea (on the Second Tuesday) | November's first Tuesday is also Election Day, so our First Tuesday Tea will be held on the Second Tuesday, November 13th, this month. Sally Ripley has graciously volunteered to host this monthly gathering for us.
There is a different host each month to our First Tuesday Teas. The host usually makes tea and coffee and makes one "goodie" but the people who come also show up with all sorts of food, muffins, coffee cake, fruit, cheese and crackers. You don't have to bring something to come, but most people do so there is usually a feast! It is really a time for socializing, connecting, exchanging ideas, stories, information about upcoming events etc. Everyone is invited ... no membership or invitation required. A reminder email about where the tea is being held is sent out each month, so if anyone would like to be on the announcement list they can send an email to the church address: nelsonchurchucc@gmail.com. |
 | 2nd Saturday Contra Dance | Our Nelson Second Saturday Contra Dance on November 10th will feature Nils Fredland calling with Skip Gorman and Gordon Peery. Nils Fredland has been making music, leading dances, and bringing people together for 20 years as a teacher; singer; instrumentalist; contra, square, and community dance leader; and workshop leader. He shares his skill, charisma, grace and goofiness with contra dancers coast to coast every weekend. He is known for his technical skill, disarming friendliness, comfortable stage presence, and soothing voice. Fiddler and mandolinist Skip Gorman has performed on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, at bluegrass festivals, cowboy gatherings and at folk venues throughout the US and Europe. Skip's fiddling captures the essence of the music, with his renderings of New England, Irish, Scottish, and French Canadian tunes providing the perfect foundation for dancing. Gordon Peery has played piano for contra dances for over 35 years. His flamboyant yet solid style has been referred to as barrell-house Irish. He has worked with Skip Gorman since the mid 1980s, and has appeared on several of Skip's recordings of both fiddle tunes and cowboy songs. Dancing begins at 8:00 PM at the Nelson Town Hall, with a short workshop beforehand. Beginners and singles are welcome and all dances are taught throughout the evening. Admission is $8 or $6 for students and seniors.

 | Town Buildings Committee Update | At 10 AM on Saturday, November 17th at the Town Hall, the Town Buildings Committee will review the proposals and budgets for repairs and renovations of the town's buildings. The total cost for the three proposed projects is approximately $700,000.
This session will focus on paying for these projects and the impact on taxes.
Come out and learn more about these projects, and make your voice heard.
The assessment work to develop the recommendations was funded in part by a grant from the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance and in part by a vote of the Town in March of 2012.
Currently, the Town Buildings Committee and the Selectmen intend to bring all three projects to Town Meeting as separate warrant articles. Your votes will decide which of these projects go forward.
More information and a link to all drawings and budgets is available at http://www.townofnelson.com/town-buildings.

 | "Following Atticus" ~ Book Discussion | Olivia Rodham Memorial Library Book Discussion in Nelson will take place on Monday morning November 19th, 2012, beginning at 10:30 am. We will be discussing "Following Atticus" by Tom Ryan.
About the book: After a close friend died of cancer, middle-aged, overweight, acrophobic newspaperman Tom Ryan decided to pay tribute to her in a most unorthodox manner. Ryan and his friend, miniature schnauzer Atticus M. Finch, would attempt to climb all forty-eight of New Hampshire's four thousand- foot peaks twice in one winter while raising money for charity. It was an adventure of a lifetime, leading them across hundreds of miles and deep into an enchanting but dangerous winter wonderland. At the heart of the amazing journey was the extraordinary relationship they shared, one that blurred the line between man and dog.
"Following Atticus" is an unforgettable true saga of adventure, friendship, and the unlikeliest of family, as one remarkable animal opens the eyes and heart of a tough-as-nails newspaperman to the world's beauty and its possibilities.
Copies of the book are available at the library.
