Homes and Jobs Act Stays on Course for 2014 Victory
After today's Assembly Appropriations hearing, we are pleased that SB 391 remains on track for victory in 2014. Bill author Senator Mark DeSaulnier reported that the California Homes and Jobs Act will remain on the Assembly Appropriations Committee's calendar while work is done to strengthen the bill, then move forward early in the new year. Because this is the first year of a two-year session, bills introduced in 2013 have until the end of the 2014 session to pass both houses. (See press release below.)
We have plenty of hard work ahead of us, but, as we head into the Labor Day weekend, take a moment to celebrate the extraordinary progress we have made!

Legislature Poised to Address Homes and Jobs Crisis with SB 391
Sen. DeSaulnier Will Work with Key Legislative Leaders to Move California Homes and Jobs Act Forward Next Year
SACRAMENTO, CA -- Sen. Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) reported that SB 391, the California Homes and Jobs Act of 2013, will remain on the Assembly Appropriations Committee's calendar while work is done to strengthen the bill and move it forward next year. Below is a statement from Sen. DeSaulnier.
"The momentum behind SB 391 is stronger than ever, with a committed and diverse coalition of over 500 organizations who secured a supermajority of support in the Senate and two Assembly policy committees. California's major business and labor organizations and advocates for children, seniors, people with disabilities and people experiencing homelessness all agree that SB 391 is the way to get California building affordable homes again and strengthen our economy.
"With funds from the successful state housing bonds Props. 46 and 1C running dry and the complete elimination of redevelopment, failure to act will leave millions without an affordable place to call home and make it incredibly difficult for California business to remain competitive. I am encouraged that Legislators are taking seriously the need to invest state dollars to leverage billions in federal and private dollars and create jobs.
"I look forward to continuing to work over the legislative break with key legislative leaders and our statewide coalition to strengthen the bill and make it a priority for legislative action early next year," said DeSaulnier.
The California Homes and Jobs Act of 2013, sponsored by the California Housing Consortium and Housing California, will get California building again. SB 391 is endorsed by more than 560 organizations and hundreds of individuals who know that building homes and creating jobs is a business imperative, a public-safety issue, and critical to helping California's budget live within its means.
