Music Therapy Newsletter-April 2016
April Newsletter

I'm sorry that this newsletter is coming out a bit later in the month than usual but that is because I was waiting to share some exciting news.  This summer, I will be leading a music and social group! Check out the next section for more information.

I hope you are all enjoying the warmer weather and starting to look foward to summer.

Social Skills and Music Class

This summer, I am partnering with Achieving Collaborative Treatment to hold a social skills and music class.  The class will be on Mondays from 2:00-2:45pm at Rhapsody, starting on June 20th and ending August 15th.  This class is geared towards kids from kindergarten to 2nd grade.  We will be working on social and communication goals using mainly music activities.  Kids will get to learn new songs, play music games and learn about new instruments.  You can find more information here.

Reply to this email or email kim@rhapsodyarts.org if you are interested in a music and social group, even if the time or age range listed here doesn't work for you.  Since this is a new group, we'd like to know how many people are interested.  If you know of someone who might be interested in this class, please forward this email to them.
Summer Registration

Summer is right around the corner!  Don't forget to sign up for summer music therapy sessions.  Also, check out the art and music classes in the brochure, especially 'Art for Every Imagination', an art class specifically for kids with disabilities.

Registration is due by May 2nd for priority scheduling so make sure to register to get the time that you'd like.
Spring Fling

Spring Fling will take place on June 5th at Gray's Tied House.  This year, students will have the opportunity to perform a song with a rock band.  If your student is interested, let me know by the end of April so we can practice the song in lessons.
Parent Trainings

If you've every wanted to learn more about ABA Therapy and autism, check out this listing of parent trainings offered by Center for Autism and Related Disorders.  CARD is setting up a new office in Madison and are offering trainings for parents.  If any of these topics are of interest to you, let me know.
The More You Know
April is Autism Awareness Month

I recently found this comic that explains the 'spectrum' part of the Autism Spectrum.  It shows the different skill areas that are taken into account in an autism diagnosis and clearly shows that functioning level in one area does not always predict functioning level in another area.

Do you think this is a good representation of the autism spectrum?
If you believe that music therapy has be beneficial for your child and you know of another parent whose child might also benefit from music therapy, please pass along our information!
