Many social workers in healthcare settings work in schools and hospitals where they counsel clients and their families. Social workers are trained listeners, providing help through support groups and community health centers and schools. The most important role of a social worker is to help the client and his or her family understand the client's illness, work through the emotions of a diagnosis, and provide counsel about the decisions that need to be made.
