January 2014

Happy New Year!
As we put this issue together, we've experienced some really wacky weather for the season, and we hope that each of you has remained safe, warm and well through it all.
Welcome to January, where the goals are high and the gyms are full.  With new year's resolutions to be better, healthier, taller, slimmer...(you fill in the blank), it can be easy to forget that being healthy is at the core of everything.
Be sure to keep warm and dry during this cold season (and it looks like it's going to be a cold one any way you look at it).  Cover your skin when you go outside and use a good, all-natural moisturizer when inside.  Cover your head to keep your body temperature steady.  Wear all-natural lip balm, use sunscreen (even under makeup), and wear sunglasses, all to protect your face and eyes from the UV ray and reflective sun from snow and ice.  Have a Safe and Healthy, Happy New Year!

Blood Donor Month (National)
Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months, especially January, due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather, and illness. A reduction in turnout can put our nation's blood inventory at a critical low. January has been designated as National Blood Donor Month to encourage donors to give or pledge to give blood. Birth Defects Prevention Awareness Month (National)

Women of childbearing age and their care providers need to know that folic acid promotes good health before, during, and after pregnancy. Daily consumption of the B vitamin folic acid beginning before pregnancy is crucial, as birth defects of the brain and spine known as neural tube defects (NTDs), including spina bifida, can occur in the early weeks following conception, often before a woman knows she is pregnant.
