         We are Thankful

For the completion of our Commercial Incubator Kitchen

The last part of the original vision of Grow Benzie, the completion of a commercial incubator kitchen to serve many in our community, was finished this summer under the supervision of Peter French, a Grow Benzie volunteer, who pulled together the finalization of this long awaited dream.  We hired a part-time Kitchen Manager, Lisa Richter Manrow, who has worked diligently to draw in the public and educate people on how to become an entrepreneur.  After only three months of operation we had one person baking bread and selling it at Farmers Markets, and 22 others who were in various stages of bringing their product to retail- obtaining insurance, creating labels, and working with Michigan's Dept. of Agriculture Inspector to obtain a license.   We ran a series of 8 classes introducing all the necessary steps involved with creating a food processing business and they were very well attended.  What a fabulous start for a long awaited dream!  These 22 people are on their way to creating jobs and income for themselves and others as their businesses prosper.

For the highly successful Farm Party event

Our fourth year's event, The Farm Party, was a huge success. Once again, our energetic volunteer extraordinaire Dave Query orchestrated the food delivery of the event by recruiting other chefs and cooking as well for us.  Without the support of the following local chefs and restaurant owners who provided delicious food this event would not be possible  Arcadia Bluff Country Club, Chimney Corners, CoHo Café, Cook's House, Crystal Lake Catering, Up North Big Pan Kitchen and Mental Levitation Society, American Spoon Foods, 9 bean Row, Zolo Grill, Crescent Bakery, Grand Rapids Brewing Co., Centro Refreshment Palace, Black Star Farms, and New Holland Brewing.

For Grow Benzie celebrating its 5th Birthday

We celebrated our fifth birthday at our Labor Day Farmers Market with extra special events.  It was so successful that we anticipate having special markets next year, perhaps 3-4 depending on how the season goes.  Only 50% of nonprofits survive the first year so we are grateful for all of the support that has made our longevity possible.

Grow Benzie's Adopt a Classroom

Through the support of Benzie Consolidated Schools Superintendent Dave Micinski, Grow Benzie has adopted a classroom from each of the four elementary schools - Lake Ann, Crystal Lake, Platte River, and Betsie Valley.   A large 20 x 48' Children's Hoop House is under construction at Grow Benzie's homestead location in Benzonia to accommodate the program.  Grow Benzie professionals, Master gardener Jackie Hice and Greenhouse Manager Britt Uecker, are developing specific programs,  based on the individual teacher's grade-level curriculum, as well as designing field programs to be used at the hoop house.

The program will begin in January 2014. Early sessions will be held at individual schools due to the nature of weather.  Current plans are for Hice and Uecker to visit the 4 classes at the respective school sites during the months of January/February & March. In order to get an early start on growing plants for the GB hoop house, students will make soil blocks in February, then plant seeds in them in March and place under grow lights in the classrooms where they can observe their growth process.

In April and May, each of the classes will take a field trip to the new Children's Hoop House at Grow Benzie.  There they will spend a half-day on site at GB, which will allow for time in the Hoop House, as well as inside Big Blue.  A lunch-time program is planned, so children can eat on site and may participate in making the meal, which could allow for creativity, fun and good nutrition education.

Industrial Arts

This program is just in the incubation stage but holds great promise for opportunities for our youth.  Working with Benzie Central High school and several expert wood working volunteers from the area, plans are afoot  for several projects.  The industrial arts program at the school no longer exists but the equipment is there to be utilized.   More to come as we get further down the path on this exciting adventure in developing the skills and talents of our students.
