Happy new year! On behalf of everyone at Kawartha Conservation, I wish you and your family a happy new year.
2012 was an exciting year, and I would like to say thank you to our volunteers, partners, staff, and board members for making it a great success.
I invite you to join us at our AGM on Jan. 16 to learn more about our activities in 2012, and help us celebrate some of the successes as we give Environmental Recognition Awards to individuals and organizations from across the watershed. (Find more details about this and other events below.)
The new year promises to be just as exciting, and I look forward to continuing our work with the community.
Rob Messervey Chief Administrative Officer |

Hear about environmental protection in the Kawarthas at our AGM, Jan. 16
Everyone is invited to attend our 34 th Annual General Meeting to learn more about the natural environment in the Kawarthas, and about some of the people and groups who have undertaken projects to protect it. Weds, Jan. 16
2 to 4 p.m. Fenelon Falls Community Centre 50 Veterans Way, Fenelon Falls map Click here to RSVP Did you know that we have one of the most unique and geographically diverse watersheds in southern Ontario? There are several major lakes, namely Balsam, Cameron, Sturgeon, Scugog, and Pigeon; the Oak Ridges Moraine in the south and the Canadian Shield in the north provide headwater sources for many of the creeks and rivers that drain to the lakes; and rolling agricultural areas, vast wetlands, and a diversity of wildlife make up the land in between the moraine and shield.
This year at the AGM we are pleased to feature a keynote presentation from Drew Monkman, nature columnist and author of Nature's Year: Changing Seasons in Central and Eastern Ontario. Environmental Recognition Awards will be given for shoreline naturalization, volunteer contributions, stream restoration, responsible development, and program support. There will also be an overview of Kawartha Conservation's activities in 2012, in addition to board elections, and brief administrative resolutions. We'll be in the new Fenelon Falls Community Centre, so there will be plenty of room for anyone who wants to come out. Click here to RSVP online or contact Brent Kulba at bkulba@kawarthaconservation.com or 705.328.2271 ext. 220.

2013 Large-Scale Fill Symposium
Every year, millions of tonnes of fill is transported to rural sites in Ontario. In the coming years, there is anticipated growth in demand for fill placement sites, given a large number of industrial, commercial, and residential construction projects in the GTA, as well as large infrastructure projects such as facilities for the Pan Am Games and new transportation routes such as the Highway 407 extension.
Join us at a symposium on Jan. 25 in Port Perry to examine and discuss the status of large fill issues and implications to communities.
This event, hosted by the Township of Scugog and Kawartha Conservation, will feature perspectives from science, industry, community, and government.
