Girl Painting Fall 2012 Calendar CoverPainting With Young Children

More Than Brushes

What is painting with young children?  Why should all children love to paint?

Children grow through having opportunities to express themselves - through play by creating block sky scrapers, to using their imaginations in a dramatic play area. By having conversations with children and adults, and through many different kinds of art activities. Let's look at paint.

When children use paint, what is happening? Let's look at one goal from The New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core - "Experiments with a variety of mediums and methods

of using art materials (such as using a big brush to paint broad strokes, combining colors, etc.)."

Patting, squeezing, rolling, molding.... molding....children to play with Play-Doh!

Children have been playing with Play-Doh since the mid-1950s. It is hard to believe that it began as something to use to clean wallpaper. It all started when children in a school in Cincinnati, Ohio, used it to make holiday ornaments.
