What parents need to know about the respiratory virus spreading.... This virus is called the Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is one of many non-polio enteroviruses.

Child Care Regulations Corner -
Background Checks
Programs and providers: A criminal history record check will be performed on any owner, employee, caregiver or volunteer of a child day care center, small day care center, school-age child care program, group family day care home, or family day care home, and any person age eighteen or over residing on the premises of a group family day care home or family day care home which is to be licensed or registered. The criminal history record check includes, providing fingerprints for submission to the division of criminal justice services to determine if the applicant has been convicted on a crime in New York State. The applicant must also submit a signed sworn statement indicating whether, to the best of his or her knowledge, he or she has ever been convicted of a crime in this state or any other jurisdiction. In addition to the criminal background check applicants must submit a State Central Register clearance form to be screened is through the statewide central register to check for indicated cases of child abuse and maltreatment. Applicants must also complete the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List Check (SEL). This SEL employment check identifies persons who are former employees of programs serving people with special needs who have been found to have committed an act of abuse or neglect regarding those service recipients.

Serious Respiratory Virus (Enterovirus D68)
This is a rare and serious virus that is spreading nationwide and there are now confirmed cases in New York. It has been responsible for emergency room visits and hospitalizations of children. The most vulnerable are children under five & those with underlying respiratory problems, such as asthma.
The virus can be found in saliva and nasal mucus. It is transmitted through close contact with an infected person, or by coughing, sneezing, touching objects or surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, body aches and may cause wheezing, as well as difficulty breathing.

In order to protect the health and safety of children in child care, it is important for all staff caring for children to be completely familiar with the program's health & infection control regulations, and the program's policy and procedures related to (share this with your child care provider):
- Exclusion Criteria
- Blue Cards - Emergency contact information & permission to obtain medical care if necessary
- Conducting Daily Health Checks
- Posting of Flu informationn - Flu Guide for Parents
- Caring for mildly ill children & children that develop symptoms of illness while in care
- Awareness of signs & symptoms of communicable diseases
- Informing parents about cases of contagious illnesses that occurred to children attending the program
- All children with Asthma must have Asthma Action Plans
- Westchester County Department of Health Communicable Disease Reporting Requirements
And most importantly, Infection control policy & procedures:
- Hand Washing
- Cleaning & Sanitizing
- Diapering
- Safety precautions related to blood and body fluids
- Glove use

Children have been playing with Play-Doh since the mid-1950s. It is hard to believe that it began as something to use to clean wallpaper. It all started when children in a school in Cincinnati, Ohio, used it to make holiday ornaments.
