Happy & Healthy
First, we would like to say congratulations to all of our students on a fantastic week of Christmas shows last month!!! What a fabulous way to end 2015! Now, it's time to look ahead and start 2016 on the right track! ATA's Recreational program will spend the month of January focusing on healthy living. During each class, a few minutes will focus on learning how to keep our bodies strong and healthy through exercise and healthy eating. Kidshealth.org has some great, practical tips for kids & grown ups. Below is some helpful info from the website.
Eat a Variety of Foods: If you eat different foods, you're more likely to get the nutrients your body needs. Shoot for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day - two fruits and three vegetables.
Drink Water & Milk: When you're really thirsty, cold water is the best thirst-quencher. Milk is also good because it contains calcium to build strong bones. Try to limit sugary drinks, like sodas, juice cocktails and fruit punches. They contain a lot of added sugar. Sugar just adds calories, not important nutrients.
Listen to Your Body: What does it feel like to be full? When you're eating, notice how your body feels and when your stomach feels comfortably full. Sometimes, people eat too much because they don't notice when they need to stop eating. Eating too much can make you feel uncomfortable and, over a period of time, can lead to unhealthy weight gain.
Screen Time: Screen time is the amount of time you spend watching TV or DVDs, playing video games and/or using a smart phone, tablet or computer. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time available for active stuff, like basketball, bike riding and swimming. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time.
Be Active: One job you have as a kid - and it's a fun one - is that you get to figure out which activities you like best. Maybe your passion is gymnastics or kickball or soccer. Ask your parents to help you do your favorite activities regularly. Find ways to be active every day.
If You're Happy & You Know It!
Intro to Tumbling classes (4-6 yrs) will be learning the following song this month.
If you're happy and you know it do a tuck; If you're happy and you know it do a pike; If you're happy and you know it, in gymnastics class you'll show it. If you're happy and you know it do a straddle.
***Sing at home with your child while performing the gymnastics shapes!
