The True Meaning of Giving Back
Humbelina and her husband work and support their family. But when her husband was unemployed for 6 months the family struggled and one month they couldn't pay the rent. Fortunately, she found CAC and received rent assistance, food, school supplies and holiday gifts. "I really appreciated it and I said someday I would return the favor for helping me, " said the mother of three. While enrolled in CAC adult education classes for English Humbelina found her chance. The instructor was looking for volunteers to help him teach Spanish at Rivercliff Lutheran Church and Humbelina immediately volunteered. "I told my kids, now is the time to return the favor to CAC." She brings her children and they enjoy helping to teach Spanish. "I like to get my kids involved in the community because I want them to know how amazing it is to help others." On a recent Saturday the family also came to CAC to help Rivercliff distribute Easter baskets to CAC clients. Thanks to CAC donors and volunteers who care to help struggling families, Humbelina's family was able to stay in their home during their time of crisis and now they are giving back in our community!

DUMC Surprise at CAC Annual Meeting!
 |
Rev. Ashley Fitzpatrick, left, presents a check to CAC Board President Catherine Lautenbacher.
|
Earlier this month CAC was surprised with a check from Dunwoody United Methodist Church (DUMC) for $20,197.83! The announcement came at the start of CAC's annual meeting hosted by DUMC on April 1. The funds were collected at offerings and included donations from children, some of whom gave change! DUMC continues to be a significant supporter of CAC, giving financial resources, in-kind donations and providing volunteer manpower. More than 75 people representing member congregations, volunteers, supporting businesses, the community and the CAC Board of Directors attended the annual meeting. Guest speaker Ganone Mogobe praised CAC for helping her when she was laid-off from her job. The Botswana native said the CAC family has been kind to her and has also helped her adjust to living in the U.S. More photos from the Annual Meeting!

Holy Innocents' Easter Food Drive
 |
HIEC member and CAC board member Charles Crosby helped load the food donated at Easter Services.
|
Members of Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church picked up empty paper grocery bags on Palm Sunday and on Easter Sunday returned with 231 bags of food totaling 2,796 pounds. Temple Sinai brought their Second Helpings truck to HIEC to transport the food to the CAC Food Pantry on Sunday afternoon where volunteers were ready to unload and shelve the food! "Our thanks to everyone that made this happen! It really does take a village and this is a wonderful example of a project where individuals from several faith groups get together to make a difference in their community," said Tamara Carrera, CAC's Executive Director.

St. John "Project Feed 5000" a Tradition
Five years ago St. John United Methodist Church set out to provide 5000 meals neighbors in need, and has made a Lenten project of it each year since. The charitable activity is based on the Bible story in which Jesus blessed five loaves of bread and two fish that multiplied to feed 5000. St. John members each take a box and food list and return the filled box to St. John where the boxes are blessed at Easter services before delivered to CAC. Each box contains enough food to feed a family of 4 for 3 days, or 36 meals. Once again St. John has reached their goal of 139 boxes containing 5000 meals! CAC thanks the St. John mission committee and everyone who donated!

Businesses Give & Help
Employees of Grainger recently gave a volunteer day at CAC. Before they came they held a food, clothing and house-hold goods drive including a washer and dryer set, and brought it all to CAC! While at CAC the handy tool people put together bicycles for the Food `n Fun Festival raffle, measured walls to determine square footage to paint, hung clothes and sorted food. To find out how your businesses can get involved contact Pam Jones at Pam.Jones@ourcac.org.
