August 2013              Helping Neighbors in Need in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody since 1987.
More than 900 get School Supplies
Girls of the War Eagles Cheerleading summer camp at Marist held a school supply drive for CAC to help local kids in need.
Donations from individuals, congregations, businesses and community groups are enabling CAC to distribute new back packs and school supplies to more than 900 local students in need. A matching gift grant from an anonymous Holy Innocents' parishioner is funding a significant portion, and many more donated supplies to fill in the gaps. Our generous donors are providing many local kids with the tools they need to succeed in school! CAC continues to accept school supply donations for students who come to us after school begins and for the Teacher's Closet program that provides free supplies to teachers year-round.
 Holy Innocents' Gift Challenge Continues

This summer we are distributing more than 900 new backpacks and school supplies to local students in need. Every dollar you give to the HI gift challenge will be matched by the donor!   Donate online at www.ourcac.org or make checks to Community Assistance Center with "HIEC school supplies" in the memo. Giving Hope & Help
Following a series of unfortunate events, Renee, a college  educated, mother of 2 found herself unemployed, facing homelessness and on the brink of a breakdown. She came to CAC for assistance and found much more. She found people who helped her get her life back on track. One of our client interviewers noticed that Renee was in dire trouble and gave her much needed emotional support. Based on Renee's work experience and education we also had a job referral, which she acted on, and subsequently got! She has since found even better employment with a career path, and has been able to put her life back together. She sent CAC a letter expressing her gratitude:

"Dear CAC,
I would like to give my deepest appreciation for the hope and help you have given me.... Because of you and the compassion showed by your interviewer my life was turned around and I will be forever grateful."
 Donations Keep Food Pantry Open
North Atlanta Church of Christ members load food to deliver to CAC.
It's been a typical summer at the CAC Food Pantry with  supplies running low. Donations decrease in summer months, but requests for food increase when children of families in need are home and not receiving free lunches at school. We thank the individuals, congregations, businesses and community groups who came to the aid and gave food this summer including North Atlanta Church of Christ which held a food drive and donated 900 bags of groceries in late July! The food goes out as fast as it comes in. The CAC Food pantry receives about 1,000 visits a month from local individuals and families in need.
Summer Lunches for Kids
Schlesinger Associate employees donated food and volunteered a day to assemble summer lunch bags for kids.

CAC gave out more than 200 Summer Lunch Bags for kids this summer to children of CAC clients.  We thank the individual and group donors who gave summer lunch bags. And we also thank employees of Schlesinger Associates who donated food and assembled more than 150 lunch bags on a day of volunteer service. Each Summer Lunch Bag contains 5 lunches that kids can easily prepare themselves.

Summer Interns Give and Learn
Nestor Guzman, left, Anna Shutley, Thamara Trematerra, Alex Chung and, Alex Hamer completed internships at CAC.

CAC was fortunate to have a group of talented and dedicated student interns this summer. The group, which includes a few more not pictured above, were selected out of a larger pool of applicants. They each completed four weeks at CAC, working in all areas of the center gaining job and life skills, such as communicating with the public and clients, working with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, and helping to manage assistance programs. They enjoyed it so much that they each stayed longer than their 4-week commitment! We enjoyed the opportunity to have them here this summer and we wish them the best as they return to their studies this month!
