Junior Ranger Day

GO WILD...

and learn

Saturday, April 26, 2014

April 26th is National Junior Ranger Day.  A day when we invite our young visitors to the park to enjoy all that the park and its partners have to offer.

There will be a ton of activities to do and lots of crafts, plus we will be playing with a few 18th century toys!

It is a great day to bring the entire family to the park and you can make a day of it by touring Independence Hall and visiting the newly reopened Benjamin Franklin Museum! (Remember Friends' members go for free!)

It is almost that time of the year... where you will see enthusiastic and passionate volunteers leading visitors around the park during the twilight hour!

Of course we are speaking about our Twilight Tours

and we are recruiting volunteers

If you are interested in volunteering to lead tours, be an ambassador to our city and brighten the day of at least one visitor, then send us an email or give us a call at 215-861-4971.

Orientation for all guides will be on Saturday, May 17, 2014

Speaker Series - April 16, 2014

Stacy C. Peeples - "Pennsylvania Hospital: Our history through the story of our collections"

Stacy Peeples, Curator and Lead Archivist at Pennsylvania Hospital, will share the history of the Pennsylvania Hospital as told through their great collection of fine art, artifacts and manuscripts.

This will cover the founding of the Pennsylvania Hospital by Thomas Bond and Benjamin Franklin, most of which is known because of Franklin's publication of Some Account of the Pennsylvania Hospital; the early years, especially the early interest in mental health care; the variety of patients, a perfect reflection of the immigration trends in this area and surgical challenges and advances. She may even tell a ghost story for good measure.

5K Run - Sunday, June 29th

Freedom 5K

Registration is now open

The Freedom 5K run hosted by the Friends of Independence National Historical Park is a fun, timed race through the streets of Philadelphia in Old City and along the pathways of Independence National Historical Park.  The 2014 5K charity run supports the Friends of Independence and our Law Enforcement Bicycle Patrol Fund.

The Freedom 5k Run in Philadelphia will be more than just a run... it will change history.  Well, maybe not change it... but it could alter our way of thinking for the day.  On June 29th, Loyalists and Patriots will meet on the grounds of Independence National Historical Park and "run it out" for Independence.  Will the Loyalist win and claim victory for Great Britain or will the Patriots rally again and fight their way to freedom?  Only our runners can decide and you must choose which side to fight for in this battle for independence.
