Join the Friends of Independence and Independence National Historical Park's head curator, Karie Diethorn, as we explore two artifacts that are always on display for the public, but rarely ever seen up close. 

 

On March 12th for our 3rd Annual Member-only Artifact Night, we will be discussing the Pennsylvania Coat of Arms painting that hangs in the Court Room of Independence Hall and the newly restored Rising Sun Chair in the Assembly Room of Independence Hall.

Looking for Participants
  

 

Do you enjoy water activities?  Have you always wanted to try your hand at paddling a boat?  Or maybe you just want to spend your day in a boat on the Schuylkill River?

 

If any of this interests you, then we want to talk to you!

 

 On June 7, 2014, National Park Service Staff, Friend's members and partners will be joining together to row for independence! Actually we will be competing in the Independence Dragon Boat Festival which is held on the Schuylkill River.

 

If you would like to join the Rowdy River Rangers team as a paddler or to help at the information table, please email the Friends or call our office at 215-861-4971.

Speaker Series - March 19, 2014
 
Crawford Wilson, Jr. - "The Stories of Mother Bethel AME Church"

  

* Original program was scheduled to have Margaret Jerrico as the speaker but due to a family emergency, Mr. Crawford Wilson, Jr. will be speaking instead.

 

 

Crawford Wilson, Jr. is the past president of Mother Bethel A.M.E.'s Historical Society, a member of the Historical Commission and serves as a docent for the Richard Allen Museum.  Mr. Wilson will be discussing the many rare artifacts that are housed in the museum... many dating back to the 17th century.  He will also share his knowledge about the history of the AME Church, of African American people and about America itself.

Location: Benjamin Franklin Museum

Enter at Market Street entrance, between 3rd and 4th Streets

Philadelphia, PA 19106

Time: 7:00 PM

Cost: $10 for members, $15 for General Public

 

Pre-registration is required to attend the Speaker Series programs. 

  

 
Scavenger Hunt - This Saturday, March 8th

 

Independence Park Pursuit 

 

This Saturday, Independence National Historical Park and the Friends are joining forces to offer a new scavenger hunt in the park. Come out and test your knowledge of history!  

  

All ages are welcome to join in, the only requirement is that you must have the Independence mobile app to play. Here are the links to download

This event is fun for the whole family and the grand prize is a personal tour of Independence Hall.

Looking for a chance to see the park from a different perspective? Take a tour with the Young Friends of Independence!

 

Join the Friends of Independence National Historical Park and the Young Friends for a  two-hour walking tour through Independence National Historical Park.  This tour will offer participants a chance to learn about three centuries of Philadelphia history at the actual places historical events took place.  During this tour, you will also learn about what the Friends and Young Friends have done, are doing, and will do to help preserve the Park and its history. 

 

 

Come out for this free tour and learn about the Park and the meet the people who support it.
