"Founding Friendship: George Washington, James Madison, and the Creation of the American Republic" presented by Dr. Stuart Leibiger

Dr. Leibiger's presentation will tell the story of the rise and fall of one of the most important collaborations in American History. During the 1780s, Washington and Madison became close friends through their mutual quest for a stronger Constitution. By the time Washington took office as first president in 1789, he relied on Madison as his closest advisor. Later, during the 1790s, a disagreement over the growing power of the federal government caused the two men to part ways, with Washington siding with the Federalist Party and Madison siding with the Republican Party.

About the speaker:

Stuart Leibiger is associate professor and chair of the History Department at La Salle University. He received his BA from the University of Virginia and his MA and PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His book, Founding Friendship: George Washington, James Madison and the Creation of the American Republic, now in its third edition, was published by the University of Virginia Press in 1999.

Volunteers needed for National Public Lands Day

September 29th is National Public Lands Day, the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy.

Thousands of volunteers around the nation will be working that Saturday on parks and trails, having fun while helping our public lands.  For this year's event, Independence National Historical Park is looking for some help in making Independence Mall look a bit better. We will be planting and weeding around Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

We are offering all participants some refreshments plus a free pass for one fee-free day on your public lands, which you can use anywhere in the United States for the next year.

If you are available to help out, please let Jeffrey Collins, Education Program and Volunteer Program Manager for Independence National Historical Park, know by September 24, so we have enough refreshments, gloves and tools for everybody.  Jeffery can be contacted at (215) 597-1039 or Jeffery_Collins@nps.gov

Come join us on National Public Lands Day!
