Vertical Core Progressions
Chris Ritter explains how to develop a solid foundation for stronger swimming
Leg Lift Yoga
Although swimming is done in a horizontal position, it's valuable to engage muscles in different orientations. Many people don't realize that you can do core work in a vertical position. Remember, your core is primarily meant to stabilize your body as well as transfer energy from one part of the body to another. Although gravity is less of a factor in swimming, it's vital to be strong in a standing position.

USMS Speedo 1-Hour Swim National Championship ePostal
It's not too late to set aside a workout or two so your swimmers can participate
1-Hour ePostal 2016
The annual USMS Speedo 1-Hour Swim National Championship ePostal is in full swing, but you've still got time to help your swimmers participate. The event runs from January 1 to January 31, and the objective is to swim as far as possible in 1 hour, in any pool 25 yards or longer. Record your splits and submit your results, just for fun, or so you can compare yourself to other swimmers around the country.

Coaches, why not set aside a couple of practice sessions to get your whole club involved? It's great for building camaraderie and provides a killer workout for participants. Lots more information is available online.

What Rule is THAT?!
Charles Cockrell, USMS Rules Chair, answers your questions
Charles Cockrell, What Rule is that, Rule Committee
Q: What's my time?

A: It's the question every swimmer asks as soon as the race is over. But, with different types of timing systems, the possibility of malfunctions, and the requirements for records to be established, the answer can be more complicated that many swimmers realize.

Determining an official time is one of the key jobs for officials, and one that we all take seriously since every swimmer is entitled to the most accurate time that we can determine for each race. Much of the work to determine official times and get the results published takes place behind the scenes at a meet. Continue reading...

All rule references are from the 2016 USMS Rule Book. For any questions about competition rules in Part 1, contact Charles Cockrell, USMS Rules Chair.

Questions from Coaches
Bill Brenner, Education Director, answers your questions

Q: What incentives can I offer my swimmers to register or renew their membership with USMS?

A: Consider taking a two-step approach. Make sure your swimmers know the benefits of USMS membership. New benefits are added and enhanced frequently, and as the leader of your program, you should be able to convey those benefits. Knowing your swimmers and the reasons why they swim enables you to pinpoint specific benefits that may enhance their USMS membership experiences. USMS provides sanctioned events for our fitness swimmers, open water enthusiasts, and competitive swimmers. Know the events, when they're scheduled, and add as many as possible to your program's seasonal plan. Continue Reading...
