Swimming is a big part of our lives, but it's not the only thing we think about. Thoughts about family, work, and what's for dinner can float through our heads as we float through the water. But if we really want to improve our swimming and get faster, we need to fight the distraction demons and maintain concentration. Here are five focus areas that can maximize the benefit you'll get from each workout you complete.

Stronger Hips, Better Balance
Chris Ritter shows how to unlock your potential with leg lifts
Leg Lift Yoga
Improving balance and strength in a single-leg stance is vital for general health and fitness-both balance and strength play a big role in avoiding accidental falls as you age. Progress can be slow when learning to master these movements, so patience and repeated practice is needed.

Special Advertorial by the Professionals at FINIS
FINIS Alignment Kickboad
Finding the right balance in the water is one of the most important, yet underrated, aspects of swimming. Although we constantly focus on elements such as technique and strength, efficiency in the water through proper body balance may actually be the easiest and smartest way to improve your stroke. Quite simply, you can have the best technique in the pool or be the strongest person on deck, but if you can't find a way to be efficient in the water through proper body balance, then you'll never be able to reach your full potential.

Miles for Marly makes an impact
CMSC Swimmers ice shoulders
Jessica Stokes, Matt McKenna, and Dave Wilkins, ice their shoulders after Cambridge Masters Swim Club's annual Miles for Marly event at Harvard University's Blodgett Pool. The 100 x 100 New Year's event raises funds for the Marly Pineda Fund, a scholarship at Smith College dedicated to the memory of Cambridge Masters coach and swimmer Marly Pineda who died tragically in 2010. This year's event drew 118 swimmers and raised more than $3,000 for the fund. Well done to all the swimmers who conquered this big training swim and managed to smile through the pain! According to a recent ESPN article about Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, swimming is his 12th man. Wilson is one of only 7 quarterbacks in the NFL to start every game since the 2012 season, and he says that longevity and durability is in part due to swimming three times a week. "I'm not a phenomenal swimmer or anything like that. I'm not Michael Phelps out there. But for me, I definitely swim laps," he told ESPN. Of the story, which got a lot of attention on our Facebook page, Sarah Welch says, "Someone's letting out our trade secrets. I think it's awesome. Watch out anyone in the path of the Seahawks these days. Go Hawks!" Swimming for the win! See what else they said and join the conversation
