Divining the Water
Tselane Gardner finds joy in the water and teaching others

Tselane Gardner, 48, of Rose Bowl Masters, didn't grow up a swimmer. Rather, she had a few, limited interactions with a neighbor's pool in the summers. "I didn't really know how to swim, so I'd just play around in the shallow end and have fun," she recalls.

But that all changed in 2004 when the then 37-year-old University of California, Irvine student decided she needed to learn how to swim before she graduated.

Leverage Your Legs
Coach Terry "Speed" Heggy on saving the legs in triathlons
Triathlon legs
Experienced runners and cyclists have strong legs and excellent lower-body endurance. Therefore, it's only natural to assume that your legs will provide an advantage in swimming. It makes sense to apply most of your energy toward a powerful kick when you race in the water. Doesn't it?

Well... no. I'm afraid it's exactly the opposite. Allocating the majority of your energy to the legs is probably going to have a negative impact on your triathlon results.

What is Your Club Doing for ALTS Month?
There are a variety of ways to help
ALTS Inst Cert Header
A big thank you to everyone helping us spread the message and the multitude of USMS members who are volunteering at local learn-to-swim programs around the country. Without you, we wouldn't be able to bring the important issue of adult drowning to light--while doing something very constructive about it.

If you want to get involved, it's easy! Start by finding out if your swimming facility offers adult learn-to-swim lessons. If it doesn't, ask the manager to consider adding lessons. If your facility does offer lessons, make sure that information is listed alongside your Masters program entry in the Places to Swim database.

If you'd like to establish and run a learn-to-swim program, you can apply for  $5,000 grant from the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation to get that program off the ground. Applications for grants are due by July 24

Perhaps the easiest way to help is by donating to the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation, which you can do anytime online. SSLF is a donor-funded charitable organization, and 100% of your tax-deductible donation goes to provide swimming lessons for adults around the country.
