Swimming for Life,

Afraid to Try a Swim Meet?
Coach Dustin Poe explains why meets are good for us
camaraderie

Let's be honest: Masters Swimming is the best activity around. However, there are a lot of swimmers out there who don't take advantage of everything the sport has to offer. If you've never swum in a meet before, you're missing out on a huge part of the sport.

Freestyle hip technique
Aquatic sports are the only competitive activities where the same medium (water) provides both the platform for your propulsion and the forces that slow your progress. Your arms and legs use the water to move forward, but the water's resistance is slowing you down at the same time.

Go the Distance in 2015
A fitness favorite returns in the New Year
Go the Distance has become one of the most popular events offered by USMS, with more than 4,200 members logging over 1.5 billion yards last year. (That's about 850,000 miles!)

The GTD event is back for 2015! And it's still free to participate. However, we regret that the program no longer includes free prizes automatically sent to you for reaching certain milestones. Instead, this year All American Swim Supply will be offering milestone awards and t-shirts for sale to swimmers who want to commemorate their achievements. To participate, simply set up your Fitness Log, record your yards, and keep track of your other fitness endeavors.

Sign up via your MyUSMS page and enter a goal number of miles you'd like to swim this year. Then, update your FLOG (Fitness Log) to keep track of how far you've swum. If you're curious about how you stack up, you can check the daily results, which includes everyone in the GTD program. Don't forget to update your FLOG regularly and see just how far you can do in 2015!
Avoiding Injuries with Proper Alignment
Special Advertorial from the professionals at FINIS
FINIS Alignment Kickboad

Swimming is kind to the body--its low impact and near-weightless suspension can make your joints sing with joy. However, the repetitive movements aren't always so forgiving, particularly on the shoulders. Below are three tips to help you avoid those pesky overuse injuries that can keep you from doing what you love.

Timing is Everything, Nutrition Edition

Fruit Smoothies, food

There are many different ways to be successful in your swim training, and what and when you eat contributes to that success. When it comes to maximizing the effectiveness of your nutrition, it's often a matter of timing. But, if you don't have a regular intake of quality whole food, nothing you do right before or after your workout will really make a difference. Eating whole and real food should be your first priority.

Check-Off Challenge
See how many events you can check off in 2015!

The 2015 Big Orange Check-Off Challenge, hosted this year by Tennessee Aquatics Masters, is designed to motivate swimmers by encouraging them to swim 18 events in a pool and an open water swim during the calendar year. Whether swimming an event for the first time or striving to achieve a personal best, this is a fun challenge for swimmers of all ability levels. The events may be swum in practice or in meets, in yards or meters, at any time during 2015. Coaches can use the Big Orange Check- Off Challenge to motivate their clubs to attend meets or inspire individual swimmers to try new events. The event is open to all registered USMS members. The cost is $25, and includes a t-shirt, cap and shipping.  More information is available online

This Aquatic Life
Halloween costumes know no bounds
Swimmers at the Great Joliet YMCA funny hat day
Swimmers at the Avery Y in Plainfiled, Ill., suited up in more than just their swimsuits for their annual Head Costume Contest back around Halloween. Swimmer Jean Tyrell reports, "At the start of swim practice, we all posed with our costumes. Coach Julie Potocki took individual shots and posted them on Facebook for a contest. The highest like-getter was awarded a prize at the next practice." We love this kind of silly spirit and applaud the brave, hat-donning swimmers (from left to right) DJ Hogan, Wendy Sato, Julie Miller, Nancy Duffy, Blane Erwin, Karyn Ward, Maura Carlisle, and Jean Tyrell.

Seen on Our Facebook Page
On Christmas Eve, we asked our fans to post pictures of their holiday swimming traditions, and boy, did we get a lot of really awesome pictures and ideas for what we want to do next year to celebrate our aquatic holiday season. We especially liked how Joe Blair is celebrating by "flying toward 73 years" and the scrumptious-looking swimmer cookies Nicolette DeMoe made as a "new" tradition. See what other things your fellow swimmers have been up to and add your own pictures! Happy Holidays!
