Spring has finally sprung in most of the country, and we are looking forward to a great season of swimming ahead. Congratulations to all the participants at last week's 2014 Nationwide Spring National Championship meet!

Swimming for Life,
Your Friends at U.S. Masters Swimming
Can We Offer 1,000 Swimming Lessons?
Help us scoop up matching funds to provide more lessons
SSL
Will you help us provide 1,000 swim lessons to adults who might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn to swim? The USMS Swimming Saves Lives Foundation is participating in the 2014 Giving Challenge that begins today, May 6, at noon and ends tomorrow, May 7, at noon EDT. It's a 24-hour dash for cash.

To help us reach our goal of providing 1,000 adult swimming lessons, visit givingpartnerchallenge.org, search for "Masters Swimming," and make your tax-deductible contribution of $25 or more. Every $25 donation allows a Swimming Saves Lives Foundation partner to provide a swim lesson to an adult.

With the great success we had in April of providing swimming lessons to adults who need them, let's keep the momentum going and grab some matching grants from the Giving Partner Challenge. There are approximately 400 nonprofit organizations participating in this 24-hour giving campaign that's offering $675,000 in matching and challenge grants. Help us earn these extra funds and put them to good use making adults in our communities safer around the water.

This year, the award went to Hill Carrow of North Carolina Masters Swimming. Hill is a USMS Recognized Coach who also received the 2004 U.S. Masters Swimming National Championship Meets Award.  Congratulations, Hill, and thank you for your service!
Improvement, Not Perfection
Chris Ritter shows how perfection is the enemy of progress
Backstroke

We all want to be successful, don't we? In swimming, in particular, it's clear that most swimmers are always seeking to do something better. Why else would we work so hard and keep training? But how do you define success? Are you seeking improvement, or perfection?

Coach Marty Hendrick on staying wet while traveling
Travel

As adults, our routines cannot always revolve around swimming. So what's a swimmer to do when the need to travel, whether for business or pleasure, gets in the way of the workout routine? You keep swimming, of course, with the help of USMS's Places to Swim database to help you find a place to swim and maintain your training regimen.

Seen on Our Facebook Page
A recent DailyBurn.com article that listed 10 of the world's top athletes over age 60 got a lot of likes and shares on our Facebook page. And we're super stoked about it, too, because two U.S. Masters Swimming members were featured in the piece! Maine-based marathon swimmer Pat Gallant-Charette, who's four swim into her Ocean's Seven challenge and mega-amazing triathlete Sister Madonna Buder of Spokane, Wash., were both included in the list of awe-inspiring athletes. Congrats to all those listed as well as the many inspiring swimmers out there who didn't make this list-- we know as Joan Gamso commented, "I swim with people over 60 who should on this list!" there are a lot of you age-defying swimmers out there! We sure know who we want to be like when we grow up! See what else they said and join the conversation!
About U.S. Masters Swimming
U.S. Masters Swimming, founded in 1970, is a membership-operated national governing body that promotes health, wellness, fitness, and competition for adults through swimming. It does so by partnering with more than 1,500 adult swim programs across the country; promoting information via the bimonthly member magazine, SWIMMER, monthly e-newsletters, STREAMLINES, and website, usms.org; and by sanctioning and promoting pool, open water, and virtual events and competitions. Nearly 60,000 adults are registered members of U.S. Masters Swimming.
About STREAMLINES
U.S. Masters Swimming encourages all USMS members to subscribe to STREAMLINES, a monthly publication. However, if you'd rather not receive this update, please do not click the "SafeUnsubscribe" link, as that will remove you from all other USMS National Office mailings. 5K/10K Postals Open Next Week!

If you fancy adding a new accomplishment to your list, consider swimming the 5K and 10K Postals this year. All you need to do is find a 50-meter pool and start swimming. Have a friend record your splits and submit your information online. See how you stack up against other swimmers around the country in your age group, without having to travel to an out-of-state meet.

Registration for the 5K and 10K postals opens on May 15. All swims must be completed by September 15 and entries must be received by September 25. So, what are you waiting for? Get swimming! And have fun!

If you participate in all five of the postal events in a calendar year, you can earn a snazzy patch to show off your long-distance swimming skills. Every year, a handful of Masters swimmers complete the 1-Hour Postal National Championship in January, the 5K and 10K postal events between May and September, and the 3,000- and 6,000-yard postals between September 15 and November 15. And for that they get the great blue patch you see here, plus some serious bragging rights.
