| 2014 Club Registration

|
| |
Club registration now open
Clubs can now register for 2014. Customized emails are being sent to the club contacts; a club can also renew or register online here.
It's important to have your club registered before November 1 because on that date, individual members can begin registering or renewing with USMS for the 2014 membership year. If your club is not registered, it will not appear in the pull-down lists and your members will not be able to register with you. New for 2014: For clubs that allow workout groups (sometimes referred to as chapters), the workout groups can register and receive the same benefits that clubs do. They can also register or renew online.
If your club cannot renew online, please contact your local registrar. Don't know who that is? You can find out here. here.

| Feeling Early Vertical Forearm
|
by Coach Cokie Lepinski, Swymnut Masters
Go physical, get mental!

Information abounds about early vertical forearm and the importance of EVF in establishing an efficient pull in freestyle. I've even posted several articles on my club website about EVF. But I've noticed a funny thing with my swimmers: It can be a tough concept for them to consistently display EVF in their stroke. It's one thing for our brains to grasp the notion, and quite a different beast to truly incorporate EVF into our freestyle on a regular basis. It took me months to begin seeing this in my own freestyle, and I still have to concentrate on it, especially when I'm tired. Read more...

| Questions from Coaches

with Bill Brenner, Club and Coach Services Director
How can I learn and teach the Masters lingo?
Questions about growing your club, managing club business, or becoming a better coach? Club and Coach Services Director Bill Brenner has answers.
Q: I recently registered my fitness swim program as a new club with USMS. Since adding my program's information in the Places to Swim page, I've had quite a few new members join. The problem is, I'm not a coach, and my original members don't understand the vocabulary and etiquette that Masters swimmers seem to possess. Is there a resource I can give them to bring them up to speed?
A: Congratulations on joining USMS! Although Masters swimmers seem to have a language all their own, it's not too complicated to learn once you integrate it into your daily practices. Jim Harper wrote a Masters 101 series of eight articles in 2012 that explains our language and proper etiquette. Please refer your swimmers to these articles or print copies and hand them out or post them at the pool. Either way, take some time to review the information as a group. USMS values education and this is a fun way for all your participants to learn something new.

What Rule is THAT?!

|
with Kathy Casey, USMS Rules Chair

Is butterfrog still legal?
Q: Am I correct that the breaststroke/frog kick is no longer allowed with the butterfly stroke for Masters swimmers?
A: No, there were no changes to the butterfly kick rule (101.3.3). It is still permissible to do one breaststroke kick per butterfly arm pull. The changes in the language of the butterfly rules were:
- TURNS (101.3.2, clarifying language: "...after the touch of the wall... it is permissible to turn in any manner as long as the body is on the breast when leaving the wall"),
- STROKE (101.3.2, clarifying language: "Both arms must be brought forward simultaneously over the water and pulled back simultaneously under the water throughout the race), and
- TOUCHES at the turns and the finish (101.3.4 and 101.3.5: "The touch shall be made with both hands separated and simultaneously at, above or below the water surface).
The interpretation of "both hands separated" in number three above is: The hands may touch but cannot overlap or be on top of each other. This same change was also made to the touch on the breaststroke turns and finish (101.2.4).
All rule references are from the 2013 USMS Rule Book.
