Don't overload your swimmers with too much feedback or jargon
We all know someone (maybe you are one yourself) who is a great multitasker. You know-the type of person who can concentrate on multiple things at the same time and seem to do all of them pretty darn well. Some people are just naturally able to split their focus. But for the rest of us, how well we do depends on the tasks at hand and the way our brains are wired. Personally, I can only handle one thing at a time, and this characteristic has spilled over into my coaching. Read more...

Lessons learned from the USMS Level III Certification Course
In March 2013 I attended the USMS/ASCA Level 3 coaching certification course at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. I had attended Levels 1 and 2 in 2012, and I found that Level 3 unified all of the teachings in perfect harmony, while emphasizing that we are providing services to our swimmers. In short, we are in the swimming business and our customers are our swimmers. Read more...

How can Masters programs get pool time at a local university?
Questions about growing your club, managing club business, or becoming a better coach? Club and Coach Services Director Bill Brenner has answers.
Q: What creative ways are there to get pool time for my Masters program at a local university?
A: Aquatic directors at university campuses find Masters swimming programs are a natural fit because:
- Membership in USMS begins at age 18
- Masters programs include students, faculty, staff, and alumni
- Many universities have available pool space at times convenient for Masters swimmers
- Many campuses are open to the local residents
Mel Goldstein, coach of Indy Aquatic Masters, created an opportunity to add an additional pool location for his program at a local university campus. Read more of how he did it here.

What Rule is THAT?!

|
with Kathy Casey, USMS Rules Chair

Why don't we have a standardized list of events at all meets?
Q: Why isn't the order of events standardized for all USMS meets? Sometimes the 500 is first, sometimes it's in the middle of the meet, and sometimes it's last. If it were standardized, wouldn't it make meet entries easier because everyone would know how many events would be between their chosen races? A: For national championship meets, a rotation of three orders of events, called "meet schedules," is selected by the USMS House of Delegates every four years and is published in 104.5.2, pages 29-30 of the 2013 USMS Rule Book. The Championship Committee has the authority to modify the order of events to suit a particular national championship meet. For example, a five-day meet instead of a four-day meet. Authority for the order(s) of events for meets other than national championships is left to local control, such as the LMSC or the Zone. If one standard order of events is used for every meet, half of the swimmers will be happy with the order all the time because their favorite events will never be back-to-back or the distance event is always in their favorite position in the order, and the other half will always be unhappy because their favorite events will always be back-to-back and the distance event is never in their favorite position in the order. All rule references are from the 2013 USMS Rule Book, which can be viewed or downloaded from the usms.org website. For any questions about rules contact Kathy Casey, USMS Rules Chair |

Become a certified USMS coach
The USMS Coaches Committee and Club and Coach Services have developed new curricula for Levels 1, 2, and 3 USMS Masters Coach Certification. The new courses are taught in classroom settings throughout the country. Participants receive a "Certificate of Participation" once they finish the class.
