 | Sneaky Ways of Adding Kicking to Your Workouts
|
by Coach Scott Bay, Team Blu Frog | |
Get your swimmers to kick more without sacrificing volume
When I was a kid, I was part of a group of swimmers who were poor kickers. (OK, we were terrible, actually.) Our speed came from muscling through sets using just our upper bodies. We avoided kick sets and would go from leading the lane to sucking wind at the back. Better yet, we could even fake a bathroom trip, an injury, or we'd just hide next to the wall to get out of these sets. Sound familiar?
Then I became a coach and discovered that kicking is one of the greatest ways to increase speed and fitness. Who knew? Read more...

| High Performance Camp - Second Chance!

|
|
|
A space has opened up in this awesome camp!
The next USMS High Performance Camp had been sold out, but we just got word that one space has opened up. If you or one of your swimmers had considered signing up for this event but missed the opportunity, now's your chance to get in on the action.
This outstanding camp is offered to Masters swimmers through the combined efforts of U.S. Masters Swimming, the Triangle Sports Commission, and the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The camp is limited to a small number of dedicated Masters swimmers who are committed to advancing their skills and performance. You'll be taught and analyzed by outstanding USMS coaches and professionals in the fields of sports psychology, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, technique, and resistance and flexibility training. More information is available online.
Coaches, please let your swimmers know about this great opportunity. Applications--accessible online--should be sent to Faryn Roy as soon as possible.

Coaches who are swimmers can do both
Questions about growing your club, managing club business, or becoming a better coach? Club and Coach Services Director Bill Brenner has answers.
Q: I'm a Masters swimmer who has been asked to coach a group of Masters swimmers at my pool. Can I coach them while I swim? I don't have time to coach and swim at separate practices.
A: Yes, you can coach and swim at the same time. Many of the coaches in our organization share the same time constraints as you. In order for the USMS liability and excess accident insurance to remain in effect during your practice, someone with USMS membership must be on deck with "line-of-sight" on all the athletes. This "line-of-sight" requirement is true of pool, dryland, and open water practices.
If you have lifeguards on duty during the practices that you would like to coach from the water, and your local statutes permit it, register the lifeguards as USMS members. The registration fee is well worth the investment so you can swim while coaching.
Contact USMS' insurance agent, Sandi Blumit, for additional questions regarding policy coverage.

What Rule is THAT?!

Ropes and Recall Devices
Q: Other than backstroke flags, are any other ropes still required for long course competition? A: No, except in the case of a recall rope for deaf or hard of hearing swimmers. In addition to backstroke flags, there have traditionally been two other kinds of ropes suspended across the competition pool: - A rope marking the midpoint of a long course pool and
- A recall rope.
The requirement for a rope suspended at the midpoint of a long course pool for backstroke, IMs, and medley relays was deleted last year. Although a recall rope is no longer required for all meets, a recall device IS required at all meets (107.15). A recall device can be an electronic sound-generating device (107.14) or a recall rope (107.15 and 103.9) or both. If a recall rope is used, it is placed at the midpoint of a long course pool or at the turn end backstroke flags of short course yards or meters pools (107.15). Currently, if there is a rope at the midpoint of a long course pool, it is there as a recall device not as a midpoint marker. A recall rope is required if any deaf or hard of hearing swimmers have notified the meet host by the meet entry deadline of their participation in the meet (108.3.1). All rule references are from the 2013 USMS Rule Book, which can be viewed or downloaded from the usms.org website. For any questions about rules contact Kathy Casey, USMS Rules Chair |
