by Heather Howland, Naperville Waves
Butterfly is all about rhythm and good technique. Many swimmers struggle with developing and timing a strong second kick, but like iPhone apps, there's a drill for that! One drill I like to use to help swimmers establish a strong second kick is to start by simply floating on your stomach elbows bent at 90 degrees. Read more...

Becoming A Real Swimmer
by Jen Baron, Fort Worth Area Masters
In 2009 my boys were swimming with Fort Worth Area Swim Team and I was logging a lot of bleacher time, as any swim parent does. I watched the Masters group with fear and envy thinking that it was something I could never do. I was a slow-swimming triathlete and had never had a lesson in my life. I could only swim "some version of freestyle ... " Read more...

Really Cool Website of the Month
The 25-year-old Chicago Smelts are still super cool at a quarter century. They've had a great short course season this year, too, breaking 14 Illinois Masters records. What's more, two of their members were honored recently with awards: Christopher Barrett Politan won the Illinois Masters Swimming Coach of the Year and Barb Delanois won the John Sloan Volunteer of the Year. Nice job, Smelts. You're pretty cool, and so is your fun and informative website!
To be considered for RCWOM, be sure your club's website includes the current USMS logo and Join/Renew membership button. Submit your club name and web address to press@usms.org. |

We've Got Spirit!
Masters of South Texas (MOST) Graham Johnston, Linda Calloway, and Alonso Blanco brought some Texas-sized attitude with them to Pan-Ams last month. The trio competed in the open water event and proudly displayed their colors on Siesta Key Beach. We certainly don't want to mess with this fierce and spirited crew, but we sure would like to swim with them!
