Drylands Survey
USMS Sports Medicine and Science Committee
USMS wants to know what you're doing when you're not in the pool. Please take this brief survey to tell us about your dryland training and other nonswimming activities. The results will help us learn more about designing effective dryland training programs for Masters swimmers. Upon completion of the survey, you'll be automatically entered into a random drawing to win a number of swimming-related prizes from our sponsors. Please circulate this survey link among your teammates and encourage their participation!

Make Sure Your Times Count!
by Kathy Casey If you compete at dual-sanctioned meets (meets with sanctions from both USMS and USA Swimming) or USA Swimming meets which are automatically recognized by USMS: When entering a dual-sanctioned meet or a USA Swimming meet, if the USA-S meet information states that the pool "has not been certified in accordance with 104.2.2C(4)," that is the USA Swimming pool measurement rule and means that the pool is not certified for length. If the pool length certification is not on file with USMS either, then all lanes must be measured in order for times to count for USMS purposes (USMS 105.1.6 and 105.1.7A&B). The link to the list of pools certified by USMS can be found in the "Top 10/Records and Tabulation" section of the Guide to Operations. If the USA-S meet is not dual sanctioned, it is the swimmer's responsibility to ensure that the pool is measured (read "How to get your times to count for records and Top 10 Tabulation" in the same section of the Guide to Operations for details). Except for the USA Swimming rule reference, you can access all rule information from the 2013 USMS Rule Book, which can be viewed or downloaded from the USMS website rules page. Send your rules questions to Kathy Casey, Chair of the USMS Rules Committee.

What to do with all those medals?
by Coach Bob Jennings, Villages Aquatics
After years of competition, many swimmers have a large collection of medals sitting in a drawer collecting dust. At the Villages Aquatic Swim Team, we collect all the medals that individuals may not want anymore and donate them to a local rehabilitation center. The physical therapists then give the medals to patients as they reach milestones in their recovery. For example, an individual learning to walk again after a stroke or knee replacement surgery is recognized for accomplishing goals with one of our medals. This was started when one of our members watched how difficult it was for her husband to recover from knee replacement surgery. This gives our swimmers an extra incentive for doing well in a meet where medals are given out.
