Check-Off Challenge - "Alaskan Iditaswim"
Joanne Wainwright, Chair, Alaska Masters Swimming
This year's Check-Off Challenge, hosted by Alaska Masters Swimming, is based on the famous Iditarod sled-dog race. The race follows what was originally a mail-supply route and in 1925 became known as a lifesaving highway upon which medical supplies were delivered to children in Nome by a string of mushers and their dogs.
The Iditarod is sometimes called "The Last Great Race on Earth." Every year, it begins in Anchorage during the first weekend in March. Each team of 12 to 16 dogs covers the distance to Nome in approximately 9 to 17 days.
There are 25 check-off points in the Iditarod. For the Iditaswim, we've condensed them to 20 to fit in with our event scheme and modified the Iditarod map for the back of the Iditaswim T-shirt. Event Webpage

Give the gift of swimming
Year-end giving can provide opportunities
In 2012, U.S. Masters Swimming's charitable arm, the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation, awarded more than $22,000 in grants to programs that will provide opportunities for thousands of adults to swim--adults who might not otherwise have opportunities. These programs include:
- Friends of the Pool: To expand Masters programming at the municipal aquatic facility in Islamorada, Fla.
- Walnut Creek Masters: To start a Swimming Saves Lives introductory adult swim program in Walnut Creek, Calif.
- The Advancement Foundation: To start a Swimming Saves Lives swimming program for low-income adults in southwest Virginia.
- Swim With Heart: To offer programs for adults whose opportunities are limited due to disability, lack of access to facilities, and economic pressures in Santa Monica, Calif.
- 21st Century Swimming: To teach instructors across the country to help adults who are fearful of water become comfortable and empowered as swimmers.
You can be a part of giving the gift of swimming. Please consider a year-end donation to the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation. For more information or to make a contribution visit usms.org/giving/
Speedo 1-Hour Postal National Championship
Some people do the 1-Hour Postal for competition, others do it for fitness; all who wish to participate are welcome. This event runs from January 1 to January 31, 2013. The objective is to swim as far as possible in 1 hour, in any pool you choose that is 25 yards or longer. Send your event results in electronically
or by mail
so you can compare yourself to other swimmers doing the same event. The recorded distance (total yards swum) that you submit determines the order of finish. If two or more swimmers report the same distance, a tie will be declared.
This year's Speedo 1-Hour Postal National Championship is hosted by Davis Aquatic Masters
. This is a USMS-sanctioned event and all participants must be registered for 2013 with USMS
(or the equivalent organization for non-U.S. swimmers). Foreign swimmers are not eligible for USMS records or All-American status. A copy of your current 2013 registration card must accompany your entry.

About U.S. Masters Swimming
U.S. Masters Swimming, founded in 1970, is a membership-operated national governing body that promotes health, wellness, fitness and competition for adults through swimming. It does so by partnering with more than 1,500 adult swim programs across the country; promoting information via the bimonthly member magazine, SWIMMER, monthly e-newsletters, STREAMLINES, and website, usms.org; and by sanctioning and promoting pool, open water and virtual events and competitions. More than 55,000 adults are registered members of U.S. Masters Swimming.
U.S. Masters Swimming encourages all USMS members to subscribe to STREAMLINES, however if you would rather not receive this update, please do not click the unsubscribe button, as that will remove you from all other USMS National Office mailings. Rather, please click on the "Update Profile/Email Address" link at the bottom of this email. Here you can select to discontinue your STREAMLINES service or sign up for the monthly coaches' newsletter, STREAMLINES for Coaches, and/or STREAMLINES for Volunteers, a bimonthly publication.
