Charging for additional services
Bill Brenner
Questions about growing your club, managing club business, or becoming a better coach? Club and Coach Services Director Bill Brenner has answers.

Q:
Should I charge the swimmers in my program for additional services such as video filming and clinics?

A: It's very common throughout the country for coaches to charge for video, clinics and other coaching services. Unless your program fees specifically cover these services, members in your program should expect to compensate you for your time and skills. Masters coaching is a profession. If you feel you have the skills and talent to properly analyze swimmers' strokes and technique, then you should be compensated for your services.

Typical fees for videotaping range from $35-50 per stroke per swimmer. Fees for a three hour stroke clinic run from $40-125 with variables such as the ratio of instructors to swimmers, videotaping and instructor credentials.

An underutilized source of revenue for the Masters coach is private swim lessons for adults. Surveys have shown that adults aspire to swim as the number one method of fitness. Yet, 37% can't swim the length of the pool. That's a staggering number of potential students for Masters coaches to market swim lessons to.

Due to fears and anxieties, many adults prefer to learn in a private environment and understand the value of the coach's time. Private lesson fees average $55 for a half-hour and $100 for an hour and can   be offered to swimmers of all ability levels.

Drills for open water swimmers and triathletes
Open Water Swimmer

Open water training creates some unique challenges for Masters coaches. Some have the luxury of open water venues for practice but for most coaches, the pool is still the rule. However, to serve our growing population of triathletes and open water swimmers, we can teach some of the skills necessary for a successful open water event without leaving the pool. These four drills are easy to incorporate into any practice for your open water swimmers and are a fun change of pace for your pool-only swimmers. Read more...

Will your club be registered by November 1?
Register The club renewal process is underway. All clubs that were registered in 2012 have been sent an email containing a customized renewal link. The link allows the club to renew online with a Visa or MasterCard.

The goal is to have all clubs renewed by October 31. Members can begin registering for 2013 the following day, November 1. If a club has not renewed its membership for 2013, members will not be able to join that club during the registration process.

The LMSC registrars should be creating their paper registration forms and setting their LMSC fees in the registration software. The registration form template can be found in the USMS Guide to Operations  registration section.

The National Office will begin sending renewal reminders to all 2012 members on November 1, per the membership retention plan schedule. The registrars are encouraged to send additional communications to their members as they see fit.

Once again, USMS will be offering sponsor discounts to all members who register for 2013 by December 31. Nine sponsors will be participating this year. Members will receive coupon codes in their registration receipts.

Split Requests
Cathy Kasey

Q: If the primary timing system is automatic, do swimmers still need to fill out a split request form in order for their splits to count for records or Top 10? Are split request forms mandated?

A: Yes, split request forms are mandated so that the meet host knows which splits to submit for official times. In order to get an official time from a split, a split request form must be submitted (103.18.1, 105.2.2, and 105.3.6). 105.2.2, and 105.3.6 also require a separate report of the split times in the summary of results prepared by the meet host and submitted to the LMSC Top 10 recorder. Even when doing automatic splits at nationals, a split request form for all swimmers for all events, except individual backstroke events, is submitted to the meet referee, and a separate split report is submitted to the USMS Top 10 recorder.

USMS Certification Pin

The USMS Coaches Committee and Club and Coach Services have developed new curricula for Levels 1, 2 and 3 USMS Masters Coach Certification. The new courses are taught in classroom settings throughout the country. Participants receive a "Certificate of Participation" once they finish the class. If participants wish to become certified, they must join ASCA and deliver to ASCA the completed tests from the coursework and the application for USMS/ASCA Masters Coach Certification.
